So, I gave Ubuntu (Hardy) a shot. As far as i can tell, it's uber useless. However, I'm willing to give it a shot so here's my lovely list of problems that really need some answers.

Hope some one has Linux skills.

1. Drivers refuse to install.
2. Wireless USB - unrecognized (v2.1 S which I am fairly certain is flat out incompatible with Ubuntu)
4. Just about everything in general refuses to install
5. The konsole tells me my /home/nick/Deasktop directory is non-existant
6. This is making Windows Vista look KICK ASS.

Well, if you can help me i'd appreciate it.

BTW - "refuse(s) to install" = I don't understand wtf I am supposed to do with a god d-mn archive of nonsence.

As i said above, any help will be greeted with appreciation n' some rep.

Thanks

Yah, I found them.

Gt - something or other 9600 Linux driver is on my desktop (that doesn't exist)

It's a .run file and my silly OS refuses to execute, install, have sex with or whatever it's supposed to do with the damn thing :(

Any info on the this lovely issue?

1. Drivers refuse to install.
Which ones? What's the output of "uname -a" ?

2. Wireless USB - unrecognized (v2.1 S which I am fairly certain is flat out incompatible with Ubuntu)
What's "v2.1 S"? The name of the manufacturer and exact model description would certainly help.

I guess your issue 3. got solved?

4. Just about everything in general refuses to install
Like? N00buntu comes with a package manager. Use it.

I hope you're not trying to install Windows applications on another OS? That would be like putting a boat onto a road and wondering why it doesn't move forward.

5. The konsole tells me my /home/nick/Deasktop directory is non-existant
Are you running off a Live-CD?

Open a shell, change to the directory you put that file into and run it (assuming it's not +x and you've got the kernel sources):
Code:
bash your_exact_filename.run

Better solution: check the bundled or optional packages for pre-compiled kernel module.

2. Linksys WUSB54GS ver. 2.1

3. Yah, it was cake or death.

4. No, i'm not silly enough to run windows on Linux.

You're trying to put 32bit Nvidia modules into a 64bit kernel. That'll never work. Get the 64bit version or better check the Ubuntu repositories for pre-built ones.

2. Linksys WUSB54GS ver. 2.1
If you want to mess with the NDIS wrapper and Windows drivers: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=491449

What did you try to "install"?

Give wine a try for your Windows applications. It might not be perfect, but the AppDB tells you if and how to get your Windows applications running.

Dude, your miles ahead of me.

1. I got that down, thank for that.

But! ERROR : Nvidia must be run as root.

--- I know this has some thing to do with the sudo command but other than that I'm freakin' lost.

2. I spent roughly 6.5 hours trying that.

3. A number of programs, drivers mainly.

4. I'll try wine, I thought it was only for games.

What about this?
Code:
sudo bash NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.05-pkg2.run
or:
Code:
sudo su -
bash NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.05-pkg2.run

You'd better figure out how that OS works before trying ugly hacks. Merely following vague instructions that "worked for someone" won't get you anywhere if you don't know what you're doing.

3. A number of programs, drivers mainly.
Your drivers (aka. kernel modules) have to be 64bit, so either reinstall a 32bit N00buntu, which is in any case better suited for wine, or download the correct ones.

Same for the applications: make sure you have the required 32bit libraries installed or switch to the 32bit version of the distribution.

Well,

I've gotten the Nvidia driver to work!

I've fixed youtube which consequently broke for some reason ???

i've ran general updates.

I've installed wine - not sure what it does or how it works

I've installed Envy, which helped.

Now however;

I have no freakin' idea how to download let alone install that pretty beryl thing.

I also would love to know how to determine how many drives I need to install for gaming.

My overall goals : Wireless internet, CoD4, Auto CaD.

Thanks for any help thus far and forward!

Great, though I don't recommend installing them by yourself. Most driver issues can be solved by installing (if not installed already) (Applications > Add/Remove) "Hardware Drivers" and then select the right drivers under System > Administration > Hardware Drivers.

I have no freakin' idea how to download let alone install that pretty beryl thing.
I think compiz (previously beryl) is pre-installed. But it doesn't have any of the "cool" stuff allowed. I think you need to install (Applications > Add/Remove) CompizConfig to be able to config in. Should be somewhere in System > Preferences after that.

@S(I can't remember if it's flip or Philip :) ) Thanks bunches! But...

Turns out I didn't get the driver going, I thought I did.

I downloaded the following : http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/173.14.09/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.09-pkg2.run

Then I ran it through EnvyNG.

I THOUGHT that I had mission complete.

I thought wrong. The "Hardware Drivers" menu says absolutely nothing, thus I can't enable the silly thing.

My card = gt 9600

--- If you need any more info to help you help me, just ask I've gotten somewhat handy with that silly konsole ;)

You need to enable proprietary drivers under System > Administration > Software Sources.

But you might have to remove the other half installed driver you have. As pretty good newbie advice is to never install software from anywhere else than the repos. Only when you know that the software you want isn't in the repos or the version in the repos is to old you should install it from somewhere else.

How do i go about executing your proposed plan b?

ALSO!, I downloaded and installed both wine and frost wire (Take that ubuntu!)

I still, even with Sfilip's glorious help, can not figure out how in the world i use wine. :(

I hate to be uber-noobish but...

I already fried one partition of Ubuntu trying to get this silly card working.

If you give me a tutorial, walk through, or a step-by-step walk through I would love you forever.

Also (possibly important).

Before my mildly successful endeavor in installing the driver for my card, the following did not work.

--- Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects > Extra

However, now it does (Yes iam enjoying my gooey windows ).

But, I still cant access and enable it in :

--- Administration > Hardware Drivers.

CONCLUSION --> I dunno if its installed, enabled, active, un-installed, cancerous or what!

  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats

I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
