Monster Pentagon contractors Boeing and SAIC jointly announced today that two of their latest offerings for the future robot armies of America have entered military testing early. The machines in question are a relatively dull lightweight groundcrawler job and a frankly splendid ducted-fan flying Dalek.

The two mechanoid warriors are known as the Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle (SUGV) and the Class I (Block 0) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, aka Micro Air Vehicle or MAV. According to a joint Boeing/SAIC release, 25 SUGVs and 11 MAVs will be shipped to US Army test facilities starting this month.

Sorry for yelling, but seriously seems every other article is man in his infinite wisdom has found yet another way to more efficiently dispatch his fellow earth dwellers. Did you read anything more than the first two words in the thread title? You don't seem to realize that this article represents us moving away from massive loss of life in war.

If this technology continues, international conflicts will be solved via video games. Soldiers will no longer be trained to kill people, but to control robots to kill other robots. This will actually save lives, not dispatch them.

Only the side that is winning can afford to save human lives.

Ants are one of the few living organisms that have large scales battles that are just full scale wars.

when your using machines to fight other machines whats the point in having a war in the first place?

i hate how every new technology that comes out takes away from the true soldier. Wars need to be fought with real people, not machines. to me its more inhumane to fight with robots then to fight with real soldiers, just my opinion though.

While in part I agree with you what's the point? It's all for war. This just goes to show how man's heart is against himself. Why do these things develop in the first place? Sure since Thor picked up the first club or rock who knows how long ago this all began it's all been an unstoppable escalation. So what's the point to playing it out in a video game? Why not just play a game, winner wins, why create an actual bot? Why? Because bots can kill. Is it not to protect life, but what happens when all the bots on one side die - the people are exposed. There is nothing to stop these things from being used to kill people. Hence this is my frustration with man, we don't come up with better peace solutions we just create stronger war machines. Yes I understand this is the inevitable situation all humanity finds itself in. This is also why I say we are un-intelligent. War will never be the answer.

True because the controller behind the robot, or whatever, is further disconnected from the action and hence may give in to greater offenses that he could otherwise not stomach in person. There is also a lot more you can blame atrocities on in the future, it creates more loop holes and less responsibility. Its only going to detach us from viewing these as the death machines that they really are. I any case I don't think that we can down play war. It is what it is.
