USB Ports don't work

I'm having some trouble with my USB ports and I was hoping one of you could help me out.

I'm running WinXp pre-SP1
Have a Socket A Mainboard Model K7S5A Pro

I was trying to install a FireWire driver for my PCI FireWire card, and I downloaded a USB driver instead. I installed it and... it messed up my USB ports.

I've tried to delete the USB drivers from "Device Manager" and then go into my BIOS, disable USB, reboot to windows, go back to BIOS, enable USB, and reboot yet again to windows. It worked fine, and Windows had installed USB drivers, but alas, when I plug in my mouse, it won't detect it, or anything.

My mouse's light still works, so I'm assuming it's something to do with the drivers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS: Perhaps I should start posting here more often again, and maybe even go back to WC3...

Well presumably you installed the wrong driver which Windows now sees as the better option.
Try going to Device Manager, right click on the USB driver and click on Update Driver. Make sure you pick to select it from a list and then find your old driver there...if you don't remember which one it was then I guess you'll have to try them all (keep the mouse plugged in and notice when Windows detects it).

Thanks for the reply,

My USB drivers are as follows:

SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
SiA 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
USB Root Hub
USB Root HUb

I only have 4 usb ports.

I tried to update the drivers as you said, but there were no options to update to for the two "USB Root Hub" drivers. Although, there was 1 other for the "SiS 7001" driver called "Standard HCD USB Open Host Controller", so I updated to that.

Still no luck, as it did not detect my mouse, nor anything else

Hm lets try a different approach...
Which motherboard are you using?
Go to its manufacturer's site and see if you can find something there. Look for either an USB driver or perhaps a chipset utility.

The manual just says "Socket A Mainboard" and it gives the model number 'K7S5A PRO'.

I have a cd that it came with it, and it has two sets of USB drivers: 'SiS' and 'VIA'. I tried to install
both, but niether seemed to work either...

EDIT: Actually, I think the manufacturer might be 'SiS' since there are several other drivers named "SiS x y z"

Well after installing the drivers you will probably have to go through that update driver deal again, this time picking either that VIA or SiS.

Edit: Yeah, just checked, your card has the SiS chipset so you should pick the SiS driver.

Hmm.

Well I installed the 'SiS' drivers from my motherboard CD, and I gave me an error right at the end of installation, titled something like "ErrorUSBUpgradingPlugandPlay" after the error message it said "Install finished successfully", yet it still didn't fix the problem.

I downloaded another SiS driver from the internet, but I wasn't sure which one it was (the SiS website doesn't have USB drivers). After installing it, I got the exact same error.

Not sure what's going on, but all the driver I've tried to install fail to work as of yet.

As a follow-up, I decided to buy a USB 2.0 card, with a VIA chipset. And I also reformatted my computer and installed SP1. Still no luck. The USB ports provide power, but Windows doesn't detect anything. Windows also doesn't even detect the USB PCI card I installed.

Now I'm starting to think a USB port also shorted out my Logitech Mx518 mouse, as it's not getting power from either ports, and my backup mouse is...

At this point I'm probably going to bring it in to a PC repair shop. I'm pretty surprised installing a wrong driver can do this...

Actually I was just playing with having some kind of mention of the food forum and recipes on the main page to test and see if it would engage some of those people to post something. It is just weird to get so much traffic and no engagement

So what it really is me trying to implement some kind of better site navigation not change the whole theme of the site

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.

  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
