Don't know if this will help anyone else, but I couldn't run any cinematics due to annoying KERNEL32.DLL crashes. The solution turned out to be totally stupid - I simply upgraded Windows Media Player to version 7.1 using the Windows Update feature off the start menu. Now the cinematics work fine. Maybe I'm the only dupe who didn't already think of this, but it might be an easy fix for a few other KERNEL32.DLL suffers.
Note: The Windows Media player upgrade doesn't appear as a "critical" upgrade - make sure you scroll down to find it on the list.
Let me know if this helps anyone, so I don't feel like I'm the only user dumb enough to lose nearly a week of playing time to this simple fix.
