aren't all sigs just rips of a sort? I don't see how it can end in a lawsuit when the materials used to make it were already copyright to begin with

Creative Commons for noncommercial use. Most sigs are rips, but if you give credit it is 100% legal if the image is under the CC liscense.

Crusher, please try to be a little more polite.

Ripping is completely unethical and illegal. You can't erase someone's name of a piece of art and use it.
Whitesock made you a nice sig. Way better than the one you wanted to rip. Thank him for it.
