very strange error

i have this very very strange file..i have no idea what it is..when i click properties heres what it says

Type of file: (blank)
opens with: (blank)
then it says the location of the file
then.
Size: 0 bytes
Size on disc: 0 bytes
Created: (blank)
Modified: (blank)
Accessed: (blank)

now what makes it even weirder is, when i try to cut, copy or delete, it comes up with this error:

Cannot Delete File: Cannot read from the source file or disk.

how can i get rid of this?

btw, i have win xp

What's the name of the file in question?

I have seen that Cannot read from the source file or disk error before.

If memory serves me correctly, what it means is the file you are looking at or for no longer exists.

the name of the file is ''amazon'', it was an old d2 char file...and now its doing this

Hm, I did a search on google.com within the newsgroups and came up somewhat empty.

I also did a search on Microsoft's Knowledge Base with no help.

The one thing that was somewhat common in the newsgroup postings that were found (i searched for "Cannot read from source file or disk") was something pertaining to NTFS and permissions, something about trailing spaces in filenames, -or- something about files on a CD-RW.

One thing you can try, if you haven't already, is to delete the file from a command prompt.

If that's the only file in that directory with the name of "amazon" and/or the wildcard of "ama*" wouldn't match anything else, try doing a del from a command prompt on that file and see what happens.

I'll keep hunting.

hmm not really sure, but the file might be ''amazon '' (with a space at the end)

i tried to delete it from command prompt, but it just keeps saying it cant find the file

Go in a command prompt and browse to where that file should be. If you use the command dir, does it list that file ?

dir /x will show you the appropriate SFN (Short File Name) for that file.

Use the SFN to try to delete the file (it's in the next to last column).

If there is no SFN given, then the file is <= 8 characters.

yes i did dir /x and its showing the file . what do i do now?

Ok I have tried to delete the file multiple times, and tried to just delete the entire save folder. Every single time I try to delete it, it just says, ''Cannot find the file specified''..

What you could try is creating a file with the exact same name as "amazon " and moving it to where "amazon " is. Perhaps it will overwrite it.

What is the error message when trying to delete the entire folder ?

When I try to delete the folder it says ''Cannot delete amazon . Cannot find the specified file.
And I keep trying to delete the folder with command prompt, is there some other command I have to use to delete it?

Also what I tried to do was create a new save folder and replace it. I did that and it asks me if I want to replace and I click yes, but when it's replaced it just has all of the contents of the old save folder...
Update...

Well..unfortunately it has come to this...tomorrow im just going to reformat my comp..not just because of the file lol..like all of my .dll's in c:\windows\ are compressed, which in my opinion cant be a good thing..I have tons of spyware and adware on my comp, many completely usless programs that I never use..so many corrupted files..too much to explain..so I guess this file will finally be deleted..lol...btw , system dlls being compressed is a bad thing right..?
