ok i need to know what you people think, i'm need to be conservative, because i don't have more then 1100 to spend on this computer, so...

Radeon 9700 pro ($300)

or

Geforce 4 TI 4200/4600 (about $150)

They both give about the same output for video graphics etc.. .right?

edit: i need to be able to view these new games... heh... cause that's why i'm getting a good vid card.

No actually the geforce 4 ti 4600 hundred is not near as good as the radeon 9700. The radeon 9700 is well worth the cost. What i would do if i where you, is wait until the geforce FX comes out, and buy the radeon 9700. The geforce fx is a major disapointment to me, it's not much better than the radeon 9700. (from the previews i've read) In fact at higher resolutions the radeon 9700 is ahead in fps, and polygon count.

When is that supposed to come out, and how much will Radeon probably go down, because i want to try and build this computer like right now. The only think i need right now is to decide which video card to choose from... and a place to find some DDRAM, because i found some at tigerdirect.com, but they like redid their site, and now i get errors when i load up their memory page ;( , i found it really cheap there too....

i narrowed it down to Geforce 4 ti 4200, and RAdeon pro 9700, but i still don't see how much increased preformance it will give me, the 4200 is $130 cheaper, or maybe should i get like a $20 64 mb card right now, and wait for Geforce fx?

The Geforce Ti-4200 is not meant to compete with the Radeon 9700.

Maybe compare it to the Radeon 9500 if you want.

Geforce Ti-4600 is at the same level as the Radeon 9700, although the 9700 is accepted as the better of the two, now that ATI has released good drivers.

Make sure you get a motherboard with AGP 8X capability... otherwise you won't get the full power of a card like the Radeon 9700.

Actually there is still a large gap in polygon count and fps between radeon 9700, and gf 4600. Here are the benchmark tests to prove it: http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030127/geforce_fx-19.html Plus the power of the radeon 9700 doesn't even come close to maxing out agp 4x. (neither will geforce FX) You won't have to worry about having agp 8x.

But when is geforce FX supposed to come out? And how much do you think the price of Radeon 9700 will go down?

So you're saying the only reason why Radeon is better, is because ATI has better drivers for it? So Nvidia may be releasing new drivers for it's Geforce 4's?

Would the 4200 still be an acceptable vid card, because that's the one i'm looking at...?

No... the Radeon is the better card.

I'm just saying that the Ti-4600 is the product that Nvidia has to compete again the 9700 with. (Top of the line vs top of the line for each company.)

There is no release date but it should happen within a few months. Your idea of buying a cheapo agp card will work until the price of the radeaon 9700 goes down.
