War 3 same disk not found error as LoD

Man, am I pissed. Just got War3 (naturally), and it won't detect the CD in the drive, the exact same problem I had with D2 LoD. Seriously, how stupid are Blizzard?? How can they not find a way to get these games recognized?? Someone on another help forum said that he had gotten a response from one of their techs (with regards to LoD) that said the problem with my specific drive was being looked into. At least he got a sensible answer from them, which is more than I ever got...

Sorry to be snippy, but I'm just so irritated right now. There isn't even a "do you get a please insert disk error" question on their support site. I'm not even sure if it's worth bothering to send them an email, or if they'll just tell me to disable components I don't even have, which was their advice last time. Sigh. The really irritating thing is, I like Blizzard games better than anything else out there. But I'm thinking I should give up and go buy the Sims or something.

It is definitely worth sending them an email. These kind of problems happen with new games like this - the mere fact that you posted here shows you have a desire to get your problem fixed - email support about this and they will do there best to help you - they want you to be able to play the game - and so do we :)

You're right - I'll probably send them an email tonight, but I just didn't have the mental energy to bother last night, being too upset. And the fact that the same problem with LoD hasn't been fixed since I first emailed them in January, and they just stopped responding to my emails in March, doesn't give me much confidence that they're paying any attention. Still, I shouldn't bitch if I'm not willing to put in a little effort, right? And I guess that the beginning of the game is a better time to alert them to these kinds of problems, but also I'd bet they're super busy right now with less severe tech problems.

I'll post any solutions I come across for this problem. Thanks for letting me vent - I feel a lot calmer today than I did last night, but I really want to play W3.

Just wanted to let you know that we care and you can follow up on this issue here all you want. We will do our best to try and see you get a solution to your problem. Good Luck and hang in there!

Sorry, my specs are in my sig, but it's not showing up properly for some reason.
System Specs:
-Dell Inspiron 8100 (~Jan 2002), P3, 1.2 GHz, 256 MB RAM, XP Home (clean install)
-SMBIOS A11, Intel 815EM chipset, 30GB IBM Travelstar Hard drive
-Samsung 8x CDRW/DVD SN-308B, Firmware update U005
-UXGA (15"), Mobility Radeon 7500, Driver Version 6.13.10.6006
-ESS Maestro PCI Audio, Driver Version 5.12.01.1173 M3i
-3Com 10/100 Mini PCI Ethernet Adapter Network Card / 56K Modem
-Network Card Driver Version 1.22.2.2, Modem Driver Version 3.34.41.79

I've heard from quite a few people with the same drive that have had problems with LoD, so I'm pretty sure it's an incompatibility between my drive and the Securom copy-protection.

Things I tried with D2 from the Blizzard Support page, with no results:
-Latest patch (1.09D) for LoD installed
-Original disk used
-User ID set as "Computer administrator" for XP
-No viruses detected
-Gateway and Kenwood fixes N/A
-Real mode driver fix N/A (XP)
-Protected Mode drivers fix N/A (can't follow directions - not written for XP, can't find anything similar to change)
-Sync data transfer - Primary and Secondary IDE channels set to DMA if available
-Intel Ultra ATA fix N/A (not listed as Ultra ATA controller)
-CD-Rom drive letter fix N/A (can't follow directions - not written for XP, can't find anything similar to change)

Additional things I've done:
-Clean install of XP Home
-ran Dell full system diagnostic - no errors found
-tested RAM with gold memory - no errors found
-ran defrag & scan disk
-updated video and sound drivers to latest from manufacturer's site
-updated system BIOS
-updated firmware for Samsung SN-308B CDRW/DVD-Rom (this said it would fix problems with Diablo 2 - the original D2 play disc reads fine, but the expansion disc won't read)
-tried different compatibility modes for XP
-copied music file from CD to game directory

Obviously, no dice on any of these fixes. Diablo 2 reads fine, it's just the LoD disk that doesn't.

I haven't looked for new drivers or done a defrag in a while, so those will be first on my list tonight, and I'll update when I've gone through the Blizzard checklist, but I think I'm going to have to wait for some sort of patch from Blizzard or a firmware update to fix the problem. I'll be firing off emails to tech support and to the copy-protection address as well.

Have you attempted the Virtual CD rom fix I suggested for your LOD issue with this current WC3 problem?

No, I decided not to pay for the license, and the trial period has run out. It's approx. $60 CDN, which I thought was too much just to pay to fix Blizzard's Securom issues. Frankly, I don't think I should have to resort to buying third-party software just to enable me to play my own, legally purchased game.

Virtual-CD worked great, and it was worth trying, but I'm still looking for an actual fix, not just a sort-of expensive work-around.

ETA: I also forgot to mention that I applied the War3 1.01 patch last night, with no change in results. And I've emailed the main Blizzard tech support, and the CD copy protection people, but I forgot to tell them I installed the patch too - D'oh! Still working on the other maintenance work.

Maybe you should get an older CD-Rom to avoid these headaches. I have a 12X CD-Rom which is a few years old obviously, yet I have never experienced any problems of these sorts. No overheating, damaging the CD or CD protection issues. Maybe a computer store near you is selling one for a low price ?

Blizzard's supposedly checking into the problem... However, since I went through all of this stuff already with LoD, I'm not holding my breath. Still, it's encouraging to me to see so many people on the BNet forums with the same problem. I know, it's not nice to be happy that others are just as miserable as me, but maybe this will give Blizzard a kick in the pants that they didn't have for LoD?? I can only hope!

NoName, I've considered getting an old, crappy CD-Rom drive to fix this problem, but I really don't want to spend money to fix this problem if I don't have to. Maybe Blizzard will be as good as their word and get us a fix. Or maybe I'll be following your solution soon. Bets? I'll give 2-1 against Blizzard.... :D

Yes

the problem is likely related to the antipiracy methods used by many software developers. I can't for certain that this is the issue, but it's likely nonetheless.

One thing you might consider is checking your system for any installations of Daemon tools. Sometimes you'll recieve them with other software (like compression utilities). Daemon software has been known to adversely affect the ability to install protected software.

No Daemon tools, but Edward & Michael have both said many times that Blizzard is working on it, so I'm trying to be patient. Sigh. Just going to do some maintenance, so when they get their end fixed, my laptop is a finely oiled machine, ready to kick some BNet ass! (or in my case, get beaten to a pulp, but still fun!)

Yeah, just not me :)... but I think the problem with my particular drive cropped up pretty late in the game. Here, it's an issue when there's only been one patch, which is much better, I hope. And, as an upside, Michael said that if they get a fix for War 3, they'll apply it to LoD as well.

Okay, these are the efforts of my Friday night -- I'm posting mostly so I can remember what I've done so I don't do things twice, but also 'cause I'm hoping you guys can look over this and make suggestions as to what I've missed (and I'm not doing a format if I can help it!). Most of these steps are from the Blizzard troubleshooting, but they're pretty common sense too.

- full virus scan: ok
- error check on hard-drive: ok
- defrag on hard-drive completed
- sfc run: ok (well, I assume it's ok, since I didn't get any errors - I don't think I've run this before)
- updated drivers - checked all, only found more current ones for BIOS, Sound Card, Network Card (I also updated my system specs upthread with new version #s)
- checked Intel Ultra ATA site: N/A for my chipset (815EM)
- searched for bnetcache.dat files to delete: none found
- set power management to always on, disabled screen saver
- ran Windows Update, installed all critical updates, most others
- ran Dell's diagnosic tool - full diagnostic on entire system, no errors detected
- ran Gold Memory - ok, but how many times is this thing supposed to run? I gave up after quite a while with no errors detected. And the Dell diagnostic does a full RAM check too, so I think I'm ok.

I'm waiting to get input from other Dell users as to whether I should be updating chipset drivers (my chipset is identified with Intel's tool as 815EM), or if XP is good enough. It looks to me, from the Intel Chipset Software page that the 3 options are a Graphics Driver, a Chipset Software Installation Utility, and Performance Software, which is the Application Accelerator.

"Graphics drivers for the Intel 810 and 815 chipset families are included with Windows XP." The readme for the Graphics driver indicates that 815EM is one of the chipsets supported, but this seems to indicate that the drivers aren't needed if XP and the video card are getting the job done, which they are. Lastly, the Application Accelerator isn't compatible with the 815EM chipset. So, I'm thinking I should be good as-is.

Any other suggestions??

I emailed Samsung today -- couldn't do this a couple of months ago with my LoD problem, since their site was really stupid then, but they've fixed it up. I'll post back if I get anything back from them.

And I've also fired off an email to Securom. I'd put the chance of a helpful response from either of them at like a million to 1, but it's one more thing I can say I've done, right?

No, it's a CD-burner/DVD combo drive.

The BIOS fix is no good for me, either... I'm already on the most updated BIOS for my system. Well, I should be taking this opportunity to do some serious *work*... and then I won't feel guilty when I live on bnet once the patch comes out!

Mayo also has vinegar. Vinegar is a very important part of it, it's effectively a delivery method FOR vinegar but hidden

It's a neat ingredient. But yeah it's eggs. But a LOT of people think eggs count as dairy because of the fucking food pyramid the US keeps trying to make a thing
  • Varine Varine:
I think on the new one they did change it, but idk. I don't really care whatever the government is doing right now because it's consistently absurd. Like what is RFK doing in charge of health anything? I love the bear story because WTF was that, but also, pretty much every time he talks it's WTF. Like even his voice sounds microwaved

  • Varine Varine:
The pyramid is fucking dumb as shit, no matter how you arrange it.
  • Varine Varine:
It's actually remarkably easy to make mayonnaise though. Fun fact, it USED to kind of be a French mother sauce. I believe that Careme considered it one, it may have been aioli but that has also built a different meaning than it used to. An aioli is just mayonnaise I mixed with other shit typically, I didn't start it don't come at me
  • Varine Varine:
It's very hard to do it on a large scale though
  • Varine Varine:
Depending on how you pour the oil the consistency can vary wildly, but that's true for most emulsions. I can only make about two quarts at a time with my robo coup, and if I have to make several in series because I forgot to order it becomes really obvious even when I do it. We have to wait and mix them all together to make sure we have the same thing.
  • Varine Varine:
Hollandaise is also kind of like that, emulsions require a very steady hand to do exactly the same every time.
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I live in an age with electricity so it's way fucking faster, but when I was just a boy trying to find my place I had some hardcore chefs that made use do things like that by hand. It is WAY easier to get right by hand because you control it and can feel it, but it takes soooooo much longer. And on the scale a modern kitchen requires... I serve 400-500 guests on average per day right now, if I had 100 then we could do things way better
  • Varine Varine:
But we can't do that. In the winter yeah, but I HAVE to get people through here right now so I can afford the staff that we CAN do that. We have about 100 days of summer, and if that summer doesn't make us what it will, then I can't operate the other most of the year with my staff. The owner is talking about closing two days a week to cut down on labor, I told him he should cut down on vacations and it did not go great. I do think I won though, I have to keep my fucking core staff and they have to be gainfully employed
  • Varine Varine:
Sure some of them might take a second job, but I can't just cut my entire staff to unlivable hours, nor can I can cut them off all winter if I want them to come back.
  • Varine Varine:
And also, there is no fucking way I'm pulling these hours come september. I only do this right now because I have to, the second I don't have to be the one doing it I won't be
  • Varine Varine:
I have a 5 person core staff in the kitchen, not including me or Chef Ben
  • Varine Varine:
Though two of those people are likely not making it this year. One of them has been replaced, the other I am kind of trying to. He's being a giant bitch, today I had to get onto him because in the three hours before I left he had taken like thirty minutes for cigarette breaks
  • Varine Varine:
And he was also complaining to me the other day that he was out of weed so couldn't smoke any before work that day, and was confused about why I was annoyed he was telling me, his boss, that he is smoking weed everyday before work.

  • Varine Varine:
Like yeah I can tell. I don't need to fucking know.
  • Varine Varine:
So now he's getting scrutinized and will not be top of the list. I know I don't have the smartest people but I do expect them to have some common fucking sense

I did do a rare thing for me and hire a girl last month without warning. Everyone was made at me because I started her at like 21, but she worked with me before and I was like don't care. She made 19 at her old job and I wanted her to come work with me, she is the best

  • Varine Varine:
I'm going to get her a raise at the end of the summer. She wants to go to school again, but I want her to still work with me so.... she kind of can just tell me what the price is. I can go to 25 if she keeps up. I need to get her onto line more, that's what she wants, but I need her where she is and it's not fair that she doesn't get the little bit of raise that comes with it. She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.
  • Varine Varine:
It's just hard to move and train people unnecessarily right now. And also the line fucking sucks, it's not any more fun. This is turn and burn so I have the bankroll, and everyone suffers for it
  • Varine Varine:
Eventually we'll get it balanced, we'
  • Varine Varine:
we're starting online orders and stuff, but I also turn that off all the time because I barely keep up trying to be the best at Sysco shit
  • Varine Varine:
I think it's gonna be a good fall and winter though. We're going to have a good staff, they will get along, they will be able to manage the workload and the complications, they know how to really cook this year, like every person on line knows their steak temps. Some of them use thermometers a lot and they don't always use them right, but they do know how to do it. Failure, especially in this field, is the only way to get better. They'll get it
  • Varine Varine:
They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know
