Warcraft III Beta Testing ?

Hello everyone. With Warcraft III about to enter it's beta stages, I'm getting more and more interested in Warcraft III. How are beta testers picked ? How does this beta testing buisness work ?

I'm asking those who got the chance of playing with Starcraft Beta. You guys are so lucky... Please reply in my Starcraft beta stages if you have more information.

Blizzard usually holds a random lottery for their public beta testing. Usually the most helpful members of the beta test are kept around for beta testing in the future. Popular website administrators also have a shot at getting in the betas, as well as Blizzard-friendly "hackers" (like Adron, me, skywing, soulburner, etc).
Blizzard also has an in-house beta testing team (known as Quality Assurance in game programming) that has probably been playing warcraft 3 for the past few months.
 
Is "=Drakken=" in that list ? He made a nick spoofer and a map hack for Starcraft by the name of "StarCrap". They are both well known.

So if I were to make a map hack, could I get a shot ?

According to Blizzard's FAQ, nobody get advantages. I guess that's untrue. Blizzard would not pick your everyday Joe right ?
 
You totally missed his point about Blizzard-friendly "hackers." These are people who actually tell blizzard how they did something and how to fix it, or just make something that fixes a known problem before the next patch is released. Anybody who makes map hack, name spoofers, and the like is usually hated by Blizzard and under this new policy of theirs I wouldn't be surprised if they get booted from b.net ad have a few websites shut down.
And as for nobody having an advantage, the people Magick listed aren't in the selection system, they're just given the beta automatically. D2 expansion beta had something like 2500 people, but many more copies were actually distributed. I was in the 2500, and most Blizzard people got no clue who I am, nor do they care. I was just lucky.
Unless...
 
maybe since we are linked by blizzard they provide a few copies in this direction . wouldn't hold my breath tho . even tho it would make perfect sense to have a few regulars here trouble shooting an upcomming product .

Magickian is correct about how Beta testers are selected. I have been in every beta since and including Starcraft. Keep an Eye open on Blizzards Web pages for an annoucement as to if there will be an open Beta, and if so when the signup will occur.

Also note that the beta testers never got the complete version of the game to test. All betas were battle net only, no single player, no Modem to modem, and no Lan testing (TCP/IP or IXP). Also once the beta was over the beta test version would no longer work.

How did I get into their betas:

SC beta
I applied like hundreds of Thousands of others to be in the SC beta and was randomly selected (At this time Blizzard did not know that my entry into the betta lottery was from the poster named t'kron that posted on their Diablo support forum).

During the beta, I reported about 50 bugs, and actually helped them solve several of the bugs (at the time of the SC beta, I had been in programing for over 25 years). I was one of the top 10 beta testers and was awarded a free copy of the game after the beta. During the beta Blizzard realized from my account name that I was t'kron from their forums.

Broodwar Beta.
In late August of 1998, I was asked if I was interested in assisting with the Broodwar beta, and I was also asked if I would like to become their second MVP on their forums (TheHelper was the first MVP, dinobot the third MVP). I accepted both offers.

Diable II beta
All three MVPs (TheHelper, t'kron, and Dinobot) were invited to be in the Diablo 2 beta. I am not sure if I would have been invited because of my prior work in the previous betas.

Will I be invited for the WarCraft 3 beta if there is one. Well only Blizzard knows this for sure. I can only hope that I will be invited.

Well I hardly have any skill in programming. I can only make a calculator in Visual Basic so far... *cough cough*

But since I am a regular here... do I have any chance at all ?

I know this is a really long shot but you never know. Hoping Is Believing !

Wargy is just being honest.

If they do have an open beta, I would gues that they would have between 1,000 to 2,000 slots available to be selected from the beta registration simular to what they had for Diablo 2. Now assuming that about 800,000 people apply for those 2,000 slots the probability of you getting one of the 2,000 slots is less than one percent.

By The Way, registering multiple times will be caught by Blizzard and they would throw out all of the registrations, and you would have zero percent chance of getting in the beta.
 
You can be sure I'll participate in the beta version contest. Maybe, just maybe, I will win with any luck at all...
 
What kind of information do you submit 'bout yourself when applying for the beta-testing???

Your name and address (so they knwo where to send the disc if you get in), your age (so they know if you can participate), possibly your computer specs (so they can determine if any bugs you report are hardware based or a software problem).
Any other kind of imformation just wouldn't be needed.
 
Filling out the submission form to get in the lottery to be a beta tester you must provide the following information

Your Name
Your Mailing Address (No P.O. boxes allowed)
City State and Zipcode
Country
Phone number
Age
Email Address (and make sure it is correct {Valid} and they do not like Hotmail address)

Computer information:
CPU type (P2, PIII, P4, AMD etc)
CPU speed
Hard Disk Size and free Space
Amount of Ram
Sound Card
Video Card
Video Memory size
CDRom speed (4x 16x etc)
How you connect to the internet and speed of connection.

And then I believe they even asked some general questions as to what games you own and play and the like.

Like what is RFK doing in charge of health anything? I love the bear story because WTF was that, but also, pretty much every time he talks it's WTF. Like even his voice sounds microwaved

    It's actually remarkably easy to make mayonnaise though. Fun fact, it USED to kind of be a French mother sauce. I believe that Careme considered it one, it may have been aioli but that has also built a different meaning than it used to. An aioli is just mayonnaise I mixed with other shit typically, I didn't start it don't come at me

    It's very hard to do it on a large scale though

    Depending on how you pour the oil the consistency can vary wildly, but that's true for most emulsions. I can only make about two quarts at a time with my robo coup, and if I have to make several in series because I forgot to order it becomes really obvious even when I do it. We have to wait and mix them all together to make sure we have the same thing.

    Hollandaise is also kind of like that, emulsions require a very steady hand to do exactly the same every time.

    Luckily I live in an age with electricity so it's way fucking faster, but when I was just a boy trying to find my place I had some hardcore chefs that made use do things like that by hand. It is WAY easier to get right by hand because you control it and can feel it, but it takes soooooo much longer. And on the scale a modern kitchen requires... I serve 400-500 guests on average per day right now, if I had 100 then we could do things way better

We have about 100 days of summer, and if that summer doesn't make us what it will, then I can't operate the other most of the year with my staff. The owner is talking about closing two days a week to cut down on labor, I told him he should cut down on vacations and it did not go great. I do think I won though, I have to keep my fucking core staff and they have to be gainfully employed

I can go to 25 if she keeps up. I need to get her onto line more, that's what she wants, but I need her where she is and it's not fair that she doesn't get the little bit of raise that comes with it. She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.

We're going to have a good staff, they will get along, they will be able to manage the workload and the complications, they know how to really cook this year, like every person on line knows their steak temps. Some of them use thermometers a lot and they don't always use them right, but they do know how to do it. Failure, especially in this field, is the only way to get better. They'll get it

    They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know
