Greetings,

I have a Toshiba Satellite Notebook 1800/1805 Series running Windows 2000 professional.

I have installed the original Warcraft: Orcs & Humans on this system. However, I have not been able to configure the game for sound.

The sound-card is integrated into the motherboard. The Device Manager identifies this as "ALI Audio Accelerator WDM Driver".

The IRQ is 11 and the DMA is 4.

Blizzard Support says DOS applications will only be able to recognize sound cards on IRQ 2 through 7.

I'm not sure how to proceed.

I beleive that the Warcraft 'Setup program' won't recognize my manual settings because the IRQ is at 11.

I don't want to make a configuration change that might screw up my system.

I've only been working with Win2000 for a few months and I'm still learning where everything is.

Any help would be appreciated.

Much thanks in advance.

I don't think you can do much. Warctaft 1 is a really old game... Windows 2000 is not really designed to run old DOS games that require direct access to hardware. I'm surprised it runs at all.

I think your best bet is to try and make a DOS bootdisk or install Windows 95 in a dual-boot configuration... although your sound card may not even be compatible with old standards that were used back then. And if your hard drive is formatted with NTFS file system then this won't really work.

Assigning IRQs manually is frowned upon these days unless there is an actual conflict. Windows 2000 uses the ACPI standard which basically restricts you from making such changes-- removing this standard would probably qualify as a "a configuration change that might screw up my system"

Hey Rapmaster,

Did you mean "Windows 2000 is not really designed"?

:D

Yeah google does not filter those bots. I remember when Apex was doing Google ads I saw the same IPs in there as I was seeing here - google is totally tracking all those bots as traffic and most google traffic, at least ours, was all bots

Weekend went by too fast. Next weekend I am going to try to do a nature thing - buddy of mine lives by the Colorado river and has some kayaks and invited me to do some kayaking from a place he knows to get on the river.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    That sounds like an adventure.

I wonder how all these bots that sit on the lastest content page get passed anubis or maybe they did not but they are just registering on whos online
  • The Helper The Helper:
showing up on whos online not registration
  • Ghan Ghan:
The first gate is stopping all the bots that don't execute javascript.
  • Ghan Ghan:
That's the main thing with Anubis - no Javascript, no site. Typically you can still get the site to load without Javascript.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I remember the whole javascript thing, question - how many real people disable that?
  • The Helper The Helper:
Hell I guess I could go back on the stats to know that - we probably capture that and we know the before and after
  • Ghan Ghan:
Real users can't really disable Javascript anymore these days.
  • Ghan Ghan:
The internet is broken without it.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Bot readable, not human usable.
  • The Helper The Helper:
    got it
