After discovering you guys... I'm going to repeat my post from other WC3 forums... This really is causing me problems... Anone else with ATI Radeon / WC3 issues???

Hi

Got a bit of an issue...

WC3 reboots XP after playing the game 'stories'. I also tried to run the Credits and the same thing happens. So I can get into the game, change settings, play the intro stories, but as soon as it gets to the game proper.... The senerio is that between 5 and 20 seconds, the screen and keyboard locks up, but the music continues to play in the background for about 5-10 seconds, then boom...

I have installed the latest patch (1.02a), ran war3.reg to reduce the sound and video settings to the minimum but to no avail. Any thoughts welcome.

Also - I have the latest graphics drivers, Direct x 8.1. I do not have XP SP1 (but all other patches) but don't think this is the issue, and don't really want to go through the hassle of a 30MB download on my modem. This happens even if I have all or no other programs running.

Spec:-
AMD Athlon XP 1900+ (ASUS motherboard)
512MB RAM
Hercules ATI Radeon 8500 LE (64MB)
Soundblaster Audigy

Any suggestions - ???

OK - Update...

I am still having the same problems but I have also performed the following...

- Discovered a new drivers update for the SB Audigy Card - installed but no change.
- Checked the ASUS BIOS version - I have the latest..
- Ran DXDiag and reduced the Sound to Standard instead of Full accelleration... no change
- Ran DXDiag and dis/enabled the DirectDC Accellaration... no change.
- Manually reduced the Windows Display ATI Settings to the minimum, and also adjusted the 'compatability settings' tab... no change
- Ran Warcraft in OpenGL mode - crashes even quicker (well on that occaision)...
- Completly uninstalled WC3, Ran Norton WinDoctor to remove any hidden links (It discovered a Blizzard Active X component), reinstalled... no change.

I have noted that if I reduce the Video and Sound (War3.reg) settings to a minimum it takes longer to halt and reboot, e.g. 30 seconds, but on the higher (default) settings itwill lock-up in about 10 seconds.

I have also discovered that there are newer ATI Radeon 8500 Win XP drivers (a month older than my current), although the buglist does not state anything about Warcraft III. However, I will install them and get back with an update...

Another thought - I have DirectX 8.1 installed, build 4.08.01.0810. Is this 8.1b?

Again, any suggestions welcome...

This is driving me mad...

- I have upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 1, but it still does the same, except, that instead of rebooting, Windows recovers into Safe Mode, a seemingly new feature of XP SP1.

Incidentally, I don't have to upgrade to Direct X 8.1.x as it's actually included (i.e. part of) in the OS, so that has just been updated.

- Heating problems? Very unlikey, why? As it would show up in other programmes or games, even though I've heard that WC3 is more sensitive to these things. But I've checked my CPU temperature and it's currently 58C and a motherboard temperature of 31C, well below the threshold levels.

- New Update - when I run the game world editor I get the same problem, so it's obviously making the same bad function call.

After reading all of the WC3 problem threads about, I'm fast coming to the conclusion that this is a game that has many service packs to come...

Actually 58C does seem a little high... While playing games my computer reaches 40C average. Have you tried playing with the computer box opened ?

By the way, you have the latest DirectX version. DX 8.1b was only released for previous Windows versions.
 
Try the video test program: http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=awr0569p -- does it crash here too?

I wouldn't get too worried about 58C -- its within the acceptable range (a lot of things like room temperature and quality of the fans/case with affect this but you should be ok)

Have you tried Software T&L mode? You do it the same way as OpenGL except you add -swtnl instead of -opengl (you may have already tried it because Blizzard gives these instructions on the same page as the opengl instructions) :)

Have you tried disabling the sound in the game completely?

Also turn off "environmental audio" -- although I think the war3.reg file does that

And.... I saw a post from someone who said that a certain utility solved their War3 problems with the Radeon. The link to the program is here: http://www.the-group.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=6367 (I haven't used it, and it isn't made by ATI so its one of those "at your own risk" things. Personally I find my computer stays much more stable if I don't try to 'tweak' everything but since yours is currently giving you trouble, maybe give this a shot (?)

Re: Temperature, I would agree that 58C would be too much for the motherboard, but not the CPU. This comes from the ASUS motherboard utility, and their reccommended threshold for the alarm is set to 95C for the CPU. The other giveaway that points away from temperature, is the reboot happens at exactly the same point in the game, but I won't rule it out, as stranger things have happened.

I have tried with -opengl and -swtnl, sound off, environmental audio off, etc. Again always the same problem.

The video test works sucessfully at all resolutions and colour depths, but it only displays for 5 seconds. I wonder what would happen if it ran for longer...

That utility looks great, I'll give it a go, and get back with the results...

OK,

Tried the Rage Utility, it's a nice feature, but as yet, no joy. Still crashes. I've tried quite a few tweaks, reducing settings but the same thing happens. I'll keep fiddling and see what else I can change...

The microsoft error reporting came up with the following... It's a bit 'general', but I'll give the suggestion a go...

Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None, and then click to clear the Enable Write Combining check box.
Click OK, and then click OK.

NOTE: This procedure prevents the display driver from programming the hardware incorrectly, but results in a loss of some display functionality and performance. Although you can increase the hardware acceleration settings to a point above None to regain functionality and performance, this increases the chances of the issue reoccurring. For maximum stability, leave hardware acceleration off.
 
hmmm if you follow Microsoft's workaround you will probably have to run the game in swtnl mode
 
Hi,

- I tried downgrading to the ATI 6.13.10.6014 drivers (3 before the current I believe), but it still crashes, but this time Windows XP does not recover, well it does, but the screen currupts and you can't see anything!

- I tried the MS option with -swtnl but it won't run at all.

I'm completly stuck. I have now logged a support call with Hercules (they will hopefully read this thread!) to see if they can throw any light on the subject.

Any other solutions welcome.

Update...

- I've installed the WC3 1.03 patch in high hopes, but same reboot.
- I've upgraded the Ali AGP Chipset driver(s), but it still reboots.

What interupts do your video sound and "internet conntection" have and what do they share it with

right click my computer
select properties tab
select device manager tab
hit properties button and let us know the IRQs I asked for.

Currently my IRQ's are: Display: 11, Modem: 5, Sound: 10 and Network (installed, working but not connected):11.

Working along the same thought, I've tried disabling the modem, sound and network devices (from device manager) and only running with the video - but the reboot still happens. As you probably know, under XP (or 2000), devices can share IRQ's under PCI Steering.

It is interesting to note that the network and display share the same IRQ, and I have tried to force a change so that the display and network cards are separate, but am not able to do this. They always want to 'snap' to the same IRQ, but surely this is negated when I actually disable the network card anyway?

If I do disable devices, or enter the BIOS setup and manually disable IRQ's, XP automatically reconfigures the cards to other available IRQ's. Sometimes it will try to share the modem, network and display cards on the same IRQ, but never the sound and disaply card. Why, I have no idea... But with some fiddling and turning on and off devices selectively, I have gotten it to the above, but alas no joy...

Try cleaning the CD. If you do not have a CD cleaning kit clean it using a soft cottn cloth working from the inside out.

Assuming you logged into Battlenet once, you should also go to your WC3 folder and delete the Bncache.dat file if you have one. Do not be concerned it will just be recreated the next time you log into battlenet.

I tried cleaning the CD, but the problem happens when I go into the game itself, or play the credits section (uses the same game 'engine' I believe), i.e. different parts of the CD. Also I installed the 'No CD' patch and the problem still happens, so it's not even reading the CD.

I have not even had a chance to play the game, let alone log on to Battlenet, and normally I'd like to play it in standalone mode first. But I will investigate logging on and registering.

Also, I've completly blown my monthly download quota in upgrading patches for the various subsystems, so any online gaming will have to wait until next month.
