We got tons of expertise on these forums .

for my daily task at work to troubleshoot machines on a non cost basis i use this program alot to see if the cpu or mem or vidcard has problems

i know Rapmaster recommends/uses goldmemory test
memtest86 is also a good util cept on athlon 5 and 8 systems .


so my question is what do you people use to troubleshoot a machine with vague user complaints read |DI0T complaints .

So far passmark burnin test has bin usefull to me to make a quick check .

sisoft sandra is a nice util to compare stats but it does not show me faulty memory adressing or problems with vidcard drivers .

since i took a step back and do alot of repairs of computers now. i wonder what you all use for testing machines without forking out 800 bucks for a pci card that tests the whole machine on errors .

so reply and tell me what u use to test systems the cheap way to determine a machine is okay and the user is not .

Since I work on lots of business machines, I tend to look into the logs of the machine for clues as to problems. This works for most Win NT, 2K, XP machines. For Win 98,ME I tend to use something like Troubleshooter or some amount of intuition. Oddly enough, most machines just simply require me to touch them and they no longer exhibit the problem the user described. Tends to have an adverse effect on the user when someone can simply walk up and put their hands on the machine to make it work correctly, but too many of my clients have seen it happen. This is also very good to illustrate the correct way to do some things and the user is usually to embarassed to say that they were doing it wrong when they see how easy it is to do it right.
 
I as well have the healing hands ability. When my hands fail, I usually have my own set of utilities that were made in my spare time for troubleshooting. I haven't made a RAM tester program yet, but probably would if I ever got a job that required troubleshooting broken pc's again.

Edit:
Knowledge of assembly language also came in handy repairing some crashing drivers until they get replaced, or to get the OS booting properly again. A good hex-editor with a little bit of knowledge can also be a good virus/trojan detector as well.
 
I've been pleasantly surprised at how good the hard disk utilities from the manufacturers are at detecting and fixing random problems. Especially PowerMax.

It also helps when you have a custom with a very vague problem that you can't even reproduce: you can run a bunch of diagnostics and tell them everything is fine.

Rapmaster the maxtor util is very handy i use it alot .
when it comes to trouble shooting fuiji harddrives it is rather shitty with what the company offers.

since i changed jobs sorta i deal with 98% of all repairs and building new machines and wanted to touch base to see what you people use .

and magick i ain't gonna do some programming .
i like to keep my job simple heheheh
 
Ahh, but I think you have used some of my utilities in the past. I think you needed my CMOS eraser or something once. I haven't done any app development for troubleshooting in quite awhile though, now I'm mostly fixing weird devices like hotel locks, and ice machines... They're quite fun to take apart and look at though!

    Luckily I live in an age with electricity so it's way fucking faster, but when I was just a boy trying to find my place I had some hardcore chefs that made use do things like that by hand. It is WAY easier to get right by hand because you control it and can feel it, but it takes soooooo much longer. And on the scale a modern kitchen requires... I serve 400-500 guests on average per day right now, if I had 100 then we could do things way better

    But we can't do that. In the winter yeah, but I HAVE to get people through here right now so I can afford the staff that we CAN do that. We have about 100 days of summer, and if that summer doesn't make us what it will, then I can't operate the other most of the year with my staff. The owner is talking about closing two days a week to cut down on labor, I told him he should cut down on vacations and it did not go great. I do think I won though, I have to keep my fucking core staff and they have to be gainfully employed

    I did do a rare thing for me and hire a girl last month without warning. Everyone was made at me because I started her at like 21, but she worked with me before and I was like don't care. She made 19 at her old job and I wanted her to come work with me, she is the best

I can go to 25 if she keeps up. I need to get her onto line more, that's what she wants, but I need her where she is and it's not fair that she doesn't get the little bit of raise that comes with it. She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.

We're going to have a good staff, they will get along, they will be able to manage the workload and the complications, they know how to really cook this year, like every person on line knows their steak temps. Some of them use thermometers a lot and they don't always use them right, but they do know how to do it. Failure, especially in this field, is the only way to get better. They'll get it

    They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know

    I recently had an experience with a waiter that really brought down @Varine's point about them being in sales. The first waiter just asked "anything else? deserts?" and when the table shook their head said "ok" and left. Then the other waiter came in and started going off describing the deserts and you could see the heads turning, and they finally got a bunch of deserts
