what does the chat gem do?

for diablo 2, there is a gem towards the bottom-middle of the battle net screen. I just wanted to know exactly what this strange gem does?

That question has been asked many times. Although no one but Blizzard knows for sure, most people agree that it does nothing.

The most valuable proof is the fact that no packets are sent to the server when the Chat Gem is pressed. I won't write another long text on this abused subject, but I will point you to a link that will most likely feed your curiosity.
