Hello,

I'm from sweden (15 yrs old), and i love both warcraft and starcraft. I have thought some time of getting a new computer now. The only problem is that my parents are divorced and thus i want a laptop that i can use at both of my "homes".

I researched abit on gaming laptops and found something called
"AlienwareM15x" (Link). If i buy it from manufactorer it was 1200$, and i can afford that! But when i checked what the cheapest price was here in sweden, it was about 15.000 SEK (2000$).

So, if i wanna buy it from the u.s, and send it over here by plane, what do i need to think off? I dont care if i cant use åäö on the keyboard, but im completely lost on what else can differ. im sure there is something about routers etc.

Help is aprriciated, and recommendations for other gaming computers for around 1100$ is GREATLY appriciated.

sorry for my crappy english.

the computers themselves aren't different at all, just the language of the software and the keyboard as you mentioned - there won't be any incompatibility issues if you used a laptop that was sold in the U.S. in Europe or vice-versa

I think the alienwares are all overpriced though, compare it to this lenovo

use USPY52B809 to get 600 off, making the price be 1000

these are the base specs

i7-720QM Processor ( 1.60GHz 1333MHz 6MB )
Windows 7 Home Premium 64
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 1GB
8 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz
15.6" HD Wide LED 1366x768
500GB 7200rpm hard drive
6 Cell Lithium-Ion
Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 1000
Bluetooth Version 2.1 + EDR

or maybe this HP
(NBTW34871 for 300 off, price must be 1400 or higher tho, alternatively 350 off $1499 NBK11659)
so for 1100

15.6" LED Anti-glare Display (1920x1080)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
i5-520M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L2 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.93GHz
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5830 Graphics
4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
One 6 Cell Lithium Ion Polymer Battery + One 9 Cell HP Envy Slim Fit Extended-Life Notebook Battery
Networking Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth

or at 1200 this

You might have to pay duty to import it into your country... you'd have to check with your government's Customs

If you have a relative from the states coming to sweden for example. You don't have to worry about shipping. <---this is my idea for my studio xps.

I also recommend the newer models of HP Envy 15 and 17 and I agree with slapshot, alienware is OP...compare the specs with a desktop

If I were you, I would get parts and build my own computer. It truly is cheaper.

not for laptops (yet) sadly

@ Winterherz - compare apples to apples please?

@slapshot136 - i think u misunderstood why i agreed w/u. buying desktop parts is cheaper than alienware retail, happy? here's ur apple back

To clarify, I'm telling the original poster to compare the m15x to a similar desktop spec, not 2 u

What? Barebones laptop and upgrade it... Sure the outside doesn't look as awesome as it can, but who expects an ugly laptop to have the power of an M15x :3

im curious, since I tried that a bit ago (like a year ago) and couldn't get it cheaper then buying it direct, what would you suggest for $1000-1200?

And upgrade a few parts. I don't know figure for laptop parts though.

see I did that, and it was cheaper to buy it pre-assembled, since you need the CPU/ram/hard-drive/OS, which adds up to atleast 500 easily, putting you at above the price of a pre-built laptop

Idk :p I haven't really done anything with barebones laptops before. Desktops are more the area I have any experience in.

But I don't really know why people like Laptops over Desktops :( Less power for more mobility and then they end up having their laptop turn into a dust-gathering desktop. (Happened to me. I'm guilty!)

I don't mean for Universities, I'm talking about non-University use.

I used to be the same way. I wanted a laptop for a long time. But I never moved it.

Which is why I said "they end up having their laptop turn into a dust-gathering desktop."

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
