What Was Used to Make WoW?

WoW does use a heavily (with emphasis on heavily) modified version of the WC3 engine. Yes, at first, huge walls of text.

They use 3Dstudio max/Maya to create models and enviroments
They use Photoshop (and possibly other programs) to edit/create textures.
Many textures are hand painted and then edited in, yes, for example Photoshop.

I wouldn't be surprised if they use Blizzard made editors for scripting dungeons and creating weapons and stuff, just like they first created the WC3 world editor to create the WC3 campaigns.

WoW uses a modified version of the WC3 graphics engine - in other words only the thing that displays models and draws textures is similar. One of the differences is that WoW uses m2 and BLP2 as opposed to mdx and BLP1, but the formats are quite similar.

Any source on this?

> C++ editor
...is relatively unimportant in software development. The most awesome feature it can get you is probably code highlighting. Otherwise notepad can work just as well.

Yes, they're hiring people with experience with those programs.

The WoW engine uses LUA as the default scripting engine for Quests/Mobs/Ect, while whole Dungeons are done in c++ addons, I don't know what the format is for linux, but in Win32 it would be DLL. They use an oracle based SQL server, and there are 2 main World Servers ( the two main zones ), 1 Outlands server, 2 instances servers, and 3 battlegrounds servers, per Realm ( with the exception of the BG servers, those are 3 per battlegroup ).

I have sources for all of this, but the sites violate the rules here. :p

Not sure what you were referring to here, but data related to quests, mobs and similar stuff (at least client-side, such as names/text, HP etc.) is stored inside databases (DBC files IIRC) within the MPQs.
LUA is to my knowledge only found (and used) in interface addons - there a couple of LUA files in the locale MPQ, but it appears to be just the Blizzard addons (some UI related stuff, added with some patch to speed up game loading and presumably serve as an example for user-made AddOns).

Linux equivalent to Windows' .dll would be .so (Shared Object).

SFilip, I'm talking about serverside. They have a core sever application, but all quest scripting, mob scripting, ect is done in LUA addons, and the .so addons. Basic mobs/quests/spell casting is done via the database, which as I said is a Oracle based system, and the more advanced stuff ( Escort quests, events, ect ) are done in the addons.

When you join the game programming scene, you get to find this kind of stuff out. :)
I was going to apply for Blizzards company later on, but I don't really like the way they operate, so I think I'll go somewhere else. xD

Programs? no.

They employ psychologists and learn how to make people addicted to the game.

Forget this. I want to find out what the new MMO they're making is.

You noob Banlord, the new "MMO" was Diablo 3. :p
I'm assuming you're talking about the time when they were looking for job positions for "a next-gen MMO" on their job site?

Someone should convert their binary background and see what it says...

maybe it hides the new MMO title...
