What Was Used to Make WoW?

I have always been curious how big games made their games, such as what programs do they start with and how they put it all together. I've been playing WoW for about 2+ years now, and it's always made me wonder what they used to make it. Doesn't anyone know?

C++
The WoW Engine is a modified version of the WC3 engine ( Pretty much a full redo of everything ). You can't just download a program and make a game, it takes lots and LOTS of time.

I thought Blizzard used Visual C++. I can't see how making their own C++ compiler would really help.

No, they don't have a personal editor for WoW. They use visual C++, just like everyone else.

Their own programs? I believe you're a bit confused. When they started it, there was no WYSIWYG ( What you see is what you get ) editors, they stared at a wall of text for a LONG time before anything visual showed up.

Now a days, I'm sure they have stuff like map editors and stuff they coded to make it easier, but in the beginning, everything was a wall of text.

Yep.

I also don't see a point in them making their own C++ editor, when there is always one that will be better and have more features.

If you want to make a game go buy DarkBASIC or Torque or something.

Everyone assumes I want to make a game. >.> I do, but that's not why I asked this question. I was curious because I was wondering what kind of program could make something so gargantuan.

It's actually multiple programs not just one, with several very experienced employees specialising in each program and field.

Remember, hundreds of people work on games these days and it's not that like 1 or 2 people do everything. It's more that, the modellers will do models, there will be guys that work on the physics engine for example, terrainers (not like that of WC3 Map Editor) coders, etc etc.

I use visual C++ to for learning C++. It's quite easy to use and it has a built in compiler, so you don't need a seperate compiler.

They probably used a game engine like any other one to make the game. It's just like any other multiplayer game, only on a larger scale player-wise.

They did not use a public engine.

I've already said, they used a heavily modified version of the WC3 engine, and that one was built from the ground up by them. The people that use premade engines to make games are generally the ones with smaller teams that don't have the time or money to make their own.

There is whole sites based around how they made WoW, they're pretty cool, you should check em' out.

on the wc3 engine? isn't that a misconception?

I remember back in 1999 or 2000 they announced World of Warcraft, however they later announced that their budget ran out, so they converted the WoW engine into what is wc3 today.
Then, with the increase in budget, they were able to start their works on World of Warcraft - which actually is it's own engine.

  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
