Just something I thought would be interesting, how do you write? For example, Do you become the character, or just tell the story?

I personally Write like it actually happened, but was never put in words and I'm just putting down the history of it in story format.

Also, I'd like any pros or cons about how you write, and what is really affected by it, like if you write one way then you get a better sense of the character or something like that.

I personally become the character, and it works best in first person point of view. You get a better feel of who the character is, and what they would think or do in a given situation.

A downfall, I get lost in my writing, and I don't notice the pass of time or pages. When someone talks to me, I give a generic response, not really looking up from the paper. If someone comes over and physically touches me while I am in a writing trance, I usually jump and attempt to hit them with something before I realize who they are. (not a good thing when your writing with a pen in school.) Also, once I lose my train of thought, am brought out of character, at times I normally just go back into it, and other times it's harder. Like the person who disturbed me wants a conversation instead of talking at someone who's not really listening to what they are saying.

A good thing, other than what I mentioned above, the character seems to come alive. Like they should just jump off the page into real life.

I like to write in third person. I find that when reading something i prefer to read "s/he did this" not "I did this". Thrid person makes it more of a history thing then someone telling there tale.

I bet no one here writes in second person (you did this). I dont even think many books do.

I have a few short stories of me writing in second person. It's a little difficult, that's why you don't see it used all that often.

2nd person is only for like essays and stuff.

I kinda've meant more not 3rd or 1st, but do you become the character, or just tell it, or what? and if your in the character does taht make you tell less about the settings and surroundings? that was kind of the things im after, well still, thx for the replies.

I always thought first person let you get into the person more, and feel more what they feel, but it detracts from everything else, but not as much if you don't say I to much.

Anyone here write it like your watching it unfold?

Yet again, I raise my hand. Or like I'm reading it myself (NOT saying that I'm copying anything that I write)

I find a lot more books where men are the main characters then woman, anyone writing a book or know a really good book that the main character is a woman?

(This is just a random thought)

Sabriel - Garth Nix
Liriel - Garth Nix
Abhorsen - Garth Nix
its the Abhorsen Trilogy, necromancers, free magic, The balance of technology and Magic and a girl torn in between
The 3 books are on my top 5 favorites, so they are at least worth checking out

My two current stories:

Eternal Intercessor: 3rd Person / 1st person for monologue
True Colors: 1st person -- generally giving great focus on the protagonist. Works well because there are only 4-5 characters. Anymore and 1st person POV becomes kind of tedious to write.

Thx Savior, sometimes reading books where men are always the main characters can get a little boring.

Anyone write where its first person, but there are two main characters, and one is in first and one is in 3rd? thats in the Bartimeus Trilogy, pretty good books, and funny.

Duwen, I never thought of it that way. Usually too when I write in 1st person I focus less on some of the minor, but still important character. Something I need to work on. :banghead:

I've read both 1st person and 3rd person books, and either can be awesome, it's just how you write in comparison to the perspective.

(Sorry if I tend to babble to much)

(edit)

Is that really you in your avatar Duwen?

Third person is still my preferred. I wrote TC in 1st person to try it out, and it is getting hard as I have been missing out the primary antagonist.

No.

Ah, i suspected, but wasn't sure.

I wonder, anyone written or read a book where its told from the antogonist's point of view? that would be interesting

I pretty sure there are. I have writter a short story like that. Its actualy fun to do and interesting to read because its different.

But! If its told from the antagonests point of view doesn't that change him to the protagonest.

Thats true, and thats why its so interesting to read, and so different.

I have a story I'm writing, "Tree Brother," (although I might change the title) and I have only like 5 pages on it, it's for school, (Language), and I need the completed rough draft in Two Days. And I've just started it. (The length required is a page and a half, but I can't just SToP the story right in the middle) lol...

And then I have another story that technically wasn't assigned yet for reading that I will soon need to work on too,

AND im writing a story for myself, "The Elite," Which I actually posted here and might work on it more if someone actually COMMENTED on it.

So I have a lot on my plate.

Not so. When I was younger, I was a huge fan of Goosebumps. Some of the series was made up of these "choose how the book ends" books, which were written in second person.

On topic though, I prefer 3rd person. That way, you get more angles on things. Though, 1st person is also useful if you want a limited perspective.

I write as the character. Even if my writing style is 1st or 3rd person. It really doesn't matter on how I write; I write from the character's perspective.

  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats

I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
