Which Nuon controller do you use?

Hey all,

I'm curious, so let's do a survey: when playing Nuon games, which controller do you use?

I'll start: I have a Stealth for primary use, with a backup Warrior for two-player Merlin Racing.

My ulterior motive for posting this thread is to see how many people (if any) are using hacked Logitech controllers, and how satisfied they are with them. My son is getting interested in video games, although he's not old enough to be careful with the controllers, so every time he gets his enthusiastic paws on the Stealth I cringe and fear for its safety. I would love to get another pair of Stealths (hell, while I'm dreaming let's make it a six-pack, to make sure I'm stocked for life), but they're like hen's teeth now. And since the Logitechs can still be found ...

I like the hacked logitech. The D-Pad is on the stiff side but otherwise it's a solid controller.

Thanks for the feedback. As a result I just picked up a pair of the Logitechs on eBay.

(And I don't think I'm the only one ... before I started this thread, that seller on eBay had eight of them available for a long time. Now they have only one remaining.)

I have every control for NUON, here's the rundown...

Warrior - crappy d-pad, no analog stick. Doesn't feel very comfortable to hold.

Logitech - average d-pad, analog stick is garbage. Buttons(shoulder buttons especially) are cheaply made.

Stealth - good d-pad, good analog stick...if anything, just a hair oversensitive in some games. Overall the best option, especially if you like the N64 controller.

The Stealths are more rare and expensive than the other two...even the Warriors are getting more obscure. If the Warrior and Stealth are unavailable then Logitech isn't a bad investment at what, $5, $10 each?

Yeah, the two I bought via eBay came to about US$22 shipped (total). They arrived today, I'm looking forward to making the hack.

Just now I noticed that the Logitechs are new on Amazon for only US$5 (+$6 S/H). They used to be $15 there (pre-shipping), so that's not a bad deal.

Of the two methods to hack the Logitech (widening the hole vs. narrowing the shaft (man, this is sounding pornographic)), does anyone recommend one over the other?

No idea, ive never done the mod. I'd sooner take the knife to the casing than the actual analog stick...

Wouldn't hurt to get a few logitechs, at $5 new sealed each.

I stocked up on $5 Freefalls a while back, so I could ravage the gold cases ^.^

So far, after a few rounds with the (unhacked) Logitech, I'm not that impressed with it. The buttons, especially the D-pad, are especially stiff. My thumbs were aching after only about four courses of Merlin Racing, particularly the left thumb ... I could still feel it in the morning. In my current opinion, the HPI Stealth is the clear winner.

For anyone who is regularly using the Logitech: does the stiffness loosen up given some time and use?

Also, of the two (new, sealed in box) Logitech units that I received, one has a barely functional left-shoulder button. You need to press the button in precisely the right place to get the actuator to work. This is a small sample, but I'm not impressed with their QC rate. I opened up the controller but couldn't see any obvious issues, so I wasn't able to fix it. Thus it appears that I now have an expendable unit for hacking experiments. But given the tough feel of the D-pad, my enthusiasm is dwindling.

Be glad your investment in Logitechs is small...

This is basically the same pad as the Logitech Wingman controller for PCs...they have a notorious reputation for being made quite shitty and not lasting long. I had a Logitech Wingman for PC once, eventually the shoulder buttons just collapse, the tabs inside the d-pad snap off, not to mention the analog problems...

Stealth wins, hands down.

I use a Logitech. It's far from perfect but does the job. Didn't know about any hack so might have to dig around and see what it's all about.

Saying that I'm desperate to find a Stealth though so if anyone has one for sale, or knows of one for sale, I'd really appreciate the heads up

I use a Stealth now, thanks to 3D0Man

It's going to take a while to get used to though. After years playing with the Logitech Tempest 3000 suddenly feels twice as fast.

The analog stick on the stealth controller does feel a hair oversensitive, which is most evident in Tempest. I find it easier to just use the d-pad in Tempest.
