Win XP and Starcraft Crash!!

I used to be able to play Starcraft (sc) without any problems in the past several months. But now, it is crashing. I would be able to play like 10min., and it would either freeze up my whole computer, automatically reboot my computer, sometimes it just quits on me and I go back to desktop, or sometimes it freezes it up and i can't even reboot.. I would have to shut down power and turn on the computer again. I checked the error files , but they have nothing in them... I have tried deleting bncache.dat, but that doesn't seem to work either.

I did not change much with my computer over the past months except update my Win XP drivers, and virus updates... then I updated my Nvidia and Sound Blaster drivers as well... but nothing seems to help. I also have Norton Antivirus and I scanned my computer, and there are no viruses. It doesn't matter if I enable or disable the Norton Antivirus program when I play sc... still crashes.. :( My system is the following:

AMD Athlon 900Mhz
about 400Megs RAM
40Gig HD
Plextor SCSI External CD-Rom CD-R
Phillips CD-Rom
Nvidia graphics card Ge2
Sound Blaster Live
Win XP Pro

Please help if you can.. Oh.. the problem does not only happen with bnet. This same crash occurs when I play single player games as well, while I'm not even connected to the internet, so it can't be bnet, right? And I do not have any other crashes with the computer if I don't play sc. I can play Diablo2 and that's ok.

Make sure you visit the Windows Update Site to update the compatibility feature. It might also be a good idea to get other useful updates for your computer.

Scan your computer for viruses >> Go to this site and scan your hard-disk for any viruses.

- Bad Ram >> Test with this program: http://www.goldmemory.cz

- Overheating >> Often this would be accompanied by spontaneous rebooting of the computer. This can often be fixed by cleaning off any dust you may find in the computer. Make sure you unplug your computer before dusting it.

- Device Conflicts >> Right click on "My Computer" on the desktop and then properties. Under the Device Manager tab, any conflicts would be reported with a (!) besides the device's name.

-Firewalls >> Firewalls or Anti-Viruses could cause this error. Make sure you disable any firewalls before playing the game.
 
Ok, I tested it with the GoldMemory program. I get failed for some parts, but the program never stops... it just keeps going for 20+ hours, so I pressed "esc" to quit. But now how do I know which one of my memory chips are bad?? I have 3 128MB chips.
 
yes it just loops. watch the test if it shows errors in the first third the fist chip is bad, if it shows errors in the second third the second chip is bad, the same for the last third. Every error is posted so you know when new ones occur
 
try removing some of them and testing it (either by running goldmemory or trying to play)

it may take a few trials and combinations =)
 
I have the exact same problem, and nothing I do works. I've tried everything I've found to do and could think of. So, if this is only with windows xp, than is it possible to put a different version of windows on my computer? If so, would doing this work?
 
I played Starcraft on Windows XP without any problems on my system. In fact, most of my games worked on it at first. Some just started working by magic afterwards. (not sure why though) In any event, I suspect these Windows XP problems to be caused by XP's built-in firewall.

To enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall

Open Network Connections (Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double–click Network Connections.)

Click the Dial–up, LAN or High–Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.

On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following:


To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.

To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box. This disables the firewall, your computer and network are then vulnerable to intrusions.

Like the last sentence explained, disabling the firewall does make you vulnerable, although I seriously doubt someone will hack you while playing Starcraft. (Hacking thru Starcraft is impossible, but the hacker could hack you thru another application) I suggest you get a third-party firewall. You can choose one here. I recommend Sygate Personnal Firewall.


I strongly suggest you visit the Windows Update Site and download critical updates, the compatibility updates pack (under recommended updates) and device drivers updates.

    It's actually remarkably easy to make mayonnaise though. Fun fact, it USED to kind of be a French mother sauce. I believe that Careme considered it one, it may have been aioli but that has also built a different meaning than it used to. An aioli is just mayonnaise I mixed with other shit typically, I didn't start it don't come at me

    Depending on how you pour the oil the consistency can vary wildly, but that's true for most emulsions. I can only make about two quarts at a time with my robo coup, and if I have to make several in series because I forgot to order it becomes really obvious even when I do it. We have to wait and mix them all together to make sure we have the same thing.

    Hollandaise is also kind of like that, emulsions require a very steady hand to do exactly the same every time.

    Luckily I live in an age with electricity so it's way fucking faster, but when I was just a boy trying to find my place I had some hardcore chefs that made use do things like that by hand. It is WAY easier to get right by hand because you control it and can feel it, but it takes soooooo much longer. And on the scale a modern kitchen requires... I serve 400-500 guests on average per day right now, if I had 100 then we could do things way better

We have about 100 days of summer, and if that summer doesn't make us what it will, then I can't operate the other most of the year with my staff. The owner is talking about closing two days a week to cut down on labor, I told him he should cut down on vacations and it did not go great. I do think I won though, I have to keep my fucking core staff and they have to be gainfully employed

    I'm going to get her a raise at the end of the summer. She wants to go to school again, but I want her to still work with me so.... she kind of can just tell me what the price is. I can go to 25 if she keeps up. I need to get her onto line more, that's what she wants, but I need her where she is and it's not fair that she doesn't get the little bit of raise that comes with it. She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.

Some of them use thermometers a lot and they don't always use them right, but they do know how to do it. Failure, especially in this field, is the only way to get better. They'll get it

    They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know
