Windows crashing need help!!!

Okay heres the deal, my dad was playing dod on my computer, and all the sudden the computer crashed, nothing new really, but when the computer restarted i get a blue screen that says

A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.

please help me out here, im not sure what to do

Boot from Windows XP CD

When you see "Welcome to setup" press R to enter Recovery Console

If you are dual booting you will need to pick the installation in question

then enter the password for the built-in Administrator account-- if there is no password for that account push Enter. The Administrator account's password was defined when you installed Windows... and it may have been changed along the way. Hopefully you know it.

type chkdsk /r at the prompt

type exit

Reboot

If it doesn't work, do it again and try fixboot instead of chkdsk /r
 
what makes that happen? what is that warning anyway? why it's bad?

Basically it coud be filesystem damage or an incorrect type of IDE cable. Since the computer worked fine before it's probably not the cable. If you have a UDMA 100 or 133 hdd make sure that the cable has 80 thin wires along it, not just 40 like a normal IDE cable (there will still be 40 pins, but the # of wires is differerent.... I didn't think it would cause any problem other than limiting you to dma66 but apparently MS doesn't like this.)

Anyway the page tells you which code would represent a bad filesystem, which you would attempt to fix by following the instructions in my post above.
 
well the hdd has never been touched, so i dont think its the hdd...

oh i put the xp disk in and it said there wasnt even a partion on the disk... (said 58789 something like that) was free... i mean i didnt have anything important on it anyways...

say ya think it could be a virus? i didnt have any virus scan software on it at all?
 
It didn't give you an option to get into the recovery console?

Or does it let you in but it can't even find your installation (it just shows a menu with free space)

There is a partition on the hard drive... those Windows error messages are coming from somewhere =)


I don't suppose you made those "rescue boot disks" when you installed Windows, and you have kept these disks up-to-date every time you installed a service pack right? hehe
 
no worries now, i just formated and im back on it now. Strangest thing i have ever seen...

Use Google to look up goldmemory
and run the program to test your memory. early memory failures can mess up a system in many different ways, one of which is the problem you described.
