Wireless USB mouse is choppy

I didn't change anything. No updates, software. Wireless Intellimouse explorer

Just... choppy as hell. I tried:

-Fresh batteries
-Changing signal channel
-Changing signal on the cordless phone
-Download and install intellipoint 5.2
-Checking for new programs running
-Microsoft knowledge base
-No new devices in the house
-Unplug it, restart, then try again
-I have windows XP SP2
-It was fine yesterday
-It still responds 5 feet away

I saw some things about kernel drivers and mice, but it didn't help much.

PS2 mouse works fine.

Choppy as it the mouse skips around while moving, or choppy as in it moves erratically and not always in the same direction you're telling it to move? How old is the mouse?

Choppy as in skips often. Major problems.

I DID BUY new energizer AA rechargables - do you think they....fried it? Will the new one die too?

A couple years old. But this mouse also had the battery explosion (sounded like I was shot or something)

But it was OK after the explosion, and it was ok for two weeks after. I don't know if the two problems are related

I got so sick of it, I bought a new Intellimouse Explorer, and the problems are gone.

How can that happen though? Mouse just... stop working?

It behaves differently though, the eye is on the side, where as my last one, it was in the center. So when I 'rotate' with the hand, it does slightly different things.... The old IntExplorer mouse is so much more comfortable than the new 2.0

Ah well, at least you got it fixed. Maybe battery acid was taking it's time eating through the PCB inside the mouse and that is why the effects from the explosion were not immediately evident.
