XP Pro and D2

OK, so I just installed XP, set-up all the drivers, downloaded the important looking updates for it (XP) and installed D2. So, i go and fire up D2 to see how it runs (everyone is telling me XP is faster). Well, it runs like a piece of garbage. It is pretty chopy. I managed to fix the chopyness by telling XP to give D2 the "realtime" priority setting (is there a way to always make certain programs to have a specific priority?), but this causes the game to lock-up. It also causes the FPS to drop from 60/0 skip, to 25/24 skip.

Oh, I suppose ya might want my system config =)
Mobo = whatever dell stuck in there =)
Proc = 1k P3 (slot 1 style)
Video = Geforce 256 (newest drivers)
Sound = Sb Live! Gamer-X (not the new 5.1 version; newest drivers)
Ram = 256 megs of PC100
10 gig HD

I think thats all the important stuff, thanks for any help.

It's the video card, D2 doesn't even run well on a GF3 for most people, it was designed around the Glide API which died when 3dfx got bought out ages ago.
You can try various thigns to boost performance like ensuring you're in 2d video mode (DirectDraw), making sure EAX support is off, closing all other programs, etc.
Try it out in single player and see if it's any better, some people experience crappy play because of multiplayer.

Yeah, I know it was designed around Glide, however it used to work perfectly in Win 98 SE, anyways, I'm hoping to upgrade to a GF3 in a week or so, so hopefully that will fix it? Also, is there a way to set a programs default priority to, say, highest or whatever?

BTW single player will never run faster than 25fps.

You could start diablo with the following in the target line. right click on the shortcut to change the target line.

"C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe" -fr 120

If you are running single player the game will skip frames to insure that you are running no faster than 25fps, which is what the single player game was designed to run at.

The wierd thing is my Dell running a GF2 MX 400 will run at 120fps or 60fps with the mini map on, and my CTN with a GF4 Ti4400 only runs at about 75fps or about 65fps with the mini map on.

i think that is nutz, i built a brand new computer, 2.4 GHZ Athalon XP, INVIDIA G-Force 3, 2 GIG DDRAM, 120 GB HD, Integrated Sound, and XP proffessional, as OS, and D2 was the first thing i installed it NEVER gave me probblem 1, i played untill i got to lv 83 (thats at least 3 weeks of after work play) and i had no problem, i would assume that it is a hardware prob (you did say dell right, i personally think they have that stupid kid on the commercials build the things they often have unchecked hardware conflicts) you might want to call Dell and talk to a tech rep on that one.
