Wow now were kinda straying a lot towards the topic of why its possible to deprotect a map. Thats kinda on the border of whats allowed guys. *I actually read the rules*

To those of you who intentionally deprotect maps why do you do it?

Look I may talk like I deportect maps but all that I found from this information was by accident on youtube and the creators of samuri legends legacy had a person who felt like telling me how you can deprotect maps. Now how I see it, people deprotect maps to get certian models and if the creators don't tell them how they made something, they deprotect to figure out how they did it for instance someone made a awesome inventory system like the one in TKOK( I think thats the rpg) and the makers didn't tell them how they made it. They would hack the map, get the code and everything else, make a ap and import it as there own. Speking of the inventory system in the rpg, I found someone who made it. The website is:http://wc3campaigns.net/showthread.php?t=91163. Another reason why people hack maps is to make versions for example pg's were you get expirience faster and do one hit kills. ALso they made codes were you get millions of gold and lumber. Now I don't do this but I just have found this information all by accident or by some random person on b.net who told me.The people on b.net just keep saying random things too much.

Only really popular maps should use map protectors such as Dota, Footman Wars, WMW etc... Because then people would just open them, make 2 changes, and re-release it with their name on it. It would be chaos!

how do you know that your game is going to get populair? rent a spychic to watch in the future :p? Just use them, since people on bnet are mostly of the time little kids trying to ad *cheats* to your map lol.... stupid kids -_-"

Personally, Im all with map protecting. If people don't want years of work stolen, great. If people don't want hacks in there map, sure. If people don't want their map being ruined and made imba by noobs, I don't see any reason to blame them.

However, protecting your map wont do really any of those things, anybody, even noobs, can deprotect maps as fast as you can protect them, It only really protects it from people who are to lazy to use google search.. (Allthough, theres things besides protecting it you could do! Make a copy, then put all the triggers in one folder, name them gibberish, rename all the varibles to gibberish, rename all the regions, convert it to a differnt luangage, and add random comments places. They will get to confused! :p)
If you think its bad becuase it makes it so people can't learn from it, just do what I do (Or would do if I ever finished maps -_-) and protect it and put: "If you want a unprotected version of this map for any reason, Email me at [email protected] and I will gladly supply it." on the loading screen. If they ask for it, just ask what they want it for. If they want to learn from a trigger, you don't even have to bother sending the map, just copy paste the trigger.

That is a very good idea but one thing I don't understand is how do you change the language of the world editor?

Map protecting is quite of use,but If you want to check map triggers,then it's not.Maybe you just want to look something in trigger editor and The guy protects it map so that no one can see triggers,well then protecting sucks.

PS: Even Dota unprotected it's map,so that people can see triggers! :p

There are Dota maps that aren't map protected, well de-protected by other people. Anyways steal ideas and creations... that's stupid because if you play games you would have to know how good it is, or otherwise you wouldn't even bother breaking in. So usually you would have to play it first to find out. I don't despise neither like it. Infact, I'm more on the despising side of it because it's just like ShadowFrench's map hacks and stuff, it infurates me, him, making those stuff, it rarely comes useful and people playing with each other aren't on even footing (it's not exactly a competition, but it's not fair). I mean, why do you even need it? Why so desperate to win ==. It makes the map boring if you use it in something like Tree Tag. Anyways Map Protection, I reckon you could take it off after quite a long while like Dota, EVERYBODY knows how the map maker is, and believe me, if you tried to steal all the credits and stuff, who would believe you? You would probably be despised more than credited. So in all I rather it taken off after a duration of time, because they would know who is the mapmaker, and mapstealers would know it's useless whatever they do to try and discredit the mapmaker. And mapmakers can learn from the map.

That is a very good idea but one thing I don't understand is how do you change the language of the world editor?
I was being sarcasic there (thats why I left it in white). As far as I know, your wc3 has to be installed as a differnt language for your map editor to be differnt, and even then, I think it might change to whatever they have it as when they open it.

What's wrong with map protecting? If you accidentally erased or forgot to keep a back up copy of your map then learn how to deprotect it. If people want to learn from your map they should ask you or some other person that you trust to give them the map. Protecting maps are a way for mapmakers to avoid having people receive rigged versions of their maps. Because if people get the idea that the latest version released by "noob mappers" with your name on it.Take Loap for example. There are tons of Rigged unbalanced versions out there. That's why most RP'ers hate it. It's the reason why Loap 2 Gold isn't hosted anymore. Now i respect you people who hate map protecting in general. But think about it. Do you really want people to ruin your map's name by just making rigged changes?

I dislike map protection for two main reasons:

1. It's just a map. Worst case scenario, your map get's stolen and edited. Big deal, it's a chunk of data floating around on computer and BNet. If anything, it shows that someone either liked your map enough that they thought they'd edit it, or that they hated your map and you should find out why so that they can improve it.

2. Face facts - If maps were meant to be protected, Blizzard would have included a way to protect maps. But they didn't, they even recommend that you open an existing map to learn.

Anyone could deprotect a map, but you can laugh in their face when they try to locate or understand all the code that's been merged into one huge one.

True :) I deprotected a map once for the sake of trying to find a (really annoying) bug, but all the code was in one trigger, which made it impossible to find the buf (10,000 lines of code :()

Actually Protection also optimizes a map. It deletes files in the map (Which use memory)

I don't think the protection element does anything noticeable with regards to mapsize

What about all the other things that Blizzard didn't add to WE? Perhaps it was one of those things they weren't expecting people to need/use. Gonna browse through the SC2 Q&A threads to see if there's anything about protection

If thats so, why are they including it on sc2?
Will the new map editor support locking maps? People hate losing credit for a map.

For me personally, if I made a map. I would protect the map, but I would also leave a way for the players to contact me, like a E-mail adress (seperate from my personal E-mail adress of course) or a website. If someone E-mails me for an unprotect copy of my map so they could learn. I would be glad to send them a copy to learn. But if they were lying and just wanted to take my map, I rather have them do it by someone I personally gave the map to then some random person who didn't even take the time to even send me a quick E-mail.

i think map protection is great but if its an old game like from 2000 and u really liked it but it needed work on and no one else even remebers the game i think its fine to take the map and update it *guna take lots of updates* but still give credit to the maker

there is a way to protect a map, have it open in WE, & when it is edited & saved will no longer work, this benefits the learner & prevents stealing. Search mindbreaker on epicwar.com if you want to know what I'm talking about.

I don't really care because the only reason I would open someone's map is to see how they did something. You can't protect the map from an MPQ editor, and you can read the triggers from that... So.. Protecting is basically useless, just keeps the newbs that want to rig a map away. o_o

Blizzard allready said there would be built in map protecting, yes.
Bet they can't protect against an MPQ drive. :)

Could also read the map in notepad if I really wanted to, not that hard. o_o

Ever tried opening a protected map with an MPQ Editor? I did and guess what? You can't open it ;). If you tried and succeded, then it was a map with a poor protection.

However, a map can be unprotected and opened in a MPQ Editor, but that's forbidden to discuss here.

I've succeeded in opening DotA. All the functions are called IllIlI or the likes.. And I didn't really care anyway. I just wanted to see if I could do it :p

Anyway.. Protecting maps is good :)

    I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work

And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
