Best way to do a "cover" skill?

What would be the best way to make a skill where a unit can "take cover" behind an object for extra defense / whatever? Is there a simple trigger / skill that I can use or would I have to make a whole system for this? I was considering (and still am) using Mechanical Form and forcing the player to stand still in cover but the player can take cover anywhere. I would have to issue an if / then to determine if it was in a suitable "cover" region but that would get messy fast.

Any ideas?

make the cover objects have an invisible aura (blank buff, no tool tips)

Trigger to when the unit try "take cover" check for the buff, if it's present do your stuff

if it's abscent show a message "cant take cover" or something like that

You can also make a system which gives armor based on the number of units around your unit in a small range, use the item armor ability
