Some may have seen her as tough. Tough in love, tough in the way she bore her suffering, tough in battling anyone who tried to use her son’s image for self-gain.
Betty Fox has died. She was Terry Fox’s mother.
Tough? Perhaps. She was unvarnished. Plain spoken. The constitution of a workhorse. Sometimes even scary. Someone you did not want to cross.
But, do you remember her face when Terry Fox stopped running across Canada? It seemed she carried the sorrow of the world, of all the mothers who knew they were going back to that black hole of fear that beckons when they learn their child is sick. Again.
