News Hackers target Westboro Baptist Church after Newtown threat

A group attached to the online hacktivist group Anonymous claims to have hacked the Web site of the Westboro Baptist Church in response to plans by the controversial church to picket the funerals of those massacred Friday at a school in Newtown, Conn.

As part of a campaign dubbed #OpWestBoro, KY Anonymous said yesterday it posted the personal information belonging to members of the extremist organization, which is best known for conducting protests designed to disrupt the funerals of members of the military killed in action.

The data dump included the names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and physical addresses of dozens of alleged members of the religious organization. The group did not indicate where or how it acquired the data.

The hackvitist group announced the move after several Westboro Baptist Church members announced the group's intention to target Newtown, which was the site of a school shooting Friday that claimed the lives of 26 people, 20 of whom were children ages 6 to 7.

You should watch the Louis Theroux documentaries on the church. There are two of them and his style of documentaries (from my experience) doesn't aim to prove if anything is either bad or good but rather serves to provide information on a certain groups objectives and opinions and lets you decide for yourself. Of coarse i am sure certain scenes are cut in order to maintain consistency of the views and opinions conveyed by those being interviewed however this is the same with all documentaries. I do recommend checking it

Because... history? Protestants "protested" the way Catholicism was incorporated into the state at the time; thus America gave them an opportunity to relocate and have religious freedom. It is one of the reasons why America exists.

Also, that's not fair to say. The religious polarization that you mention of your own location is most probably inaccurate.

Most importantly, this isn't even about religion. The WBC is a hate group or a gang of sorts. They use the guise of Christianity--Baptism specifically--to give themselves justification for doing horrible things to anger people. They are a group that uses hateful acts to gain media exposure. The WBC is made up of only 40 or so people, and no larger group--including Baptists--take claim to them.

That's what my wife said. I told her that nobody does that because it would make us as bad as them. Unfortunately, they get what they want no matter what. All they want is exposure, and even now we give it them freely.

You're mistaken, friend. They're doing something that brings only pain to others in an effort to gain publicity for... what? Their vainglorious, fame-starved egos? Beating them into submission in an effort to spare those grieving that additional bit of torment gives my side a +1 in my book. I know what our parents always told us growing up, but fuck it. Hurting someone physically is much worse than their mental games; at least their mental games show us how much more intelligent and stable we are. If someone were to smack a few of them around, I wouldn't be surprised...or particularly upset... but I wouldn't ever partake in such a thing myself. Food for thought.

It shows that most of them have an extremely different viewpoint on a variety of matters. Not a lot else. Admittedly I doubt most of them are very intelligent, but their beliefs are in no way an implication of that.

I'd say that their beliefs indicate exactly that. A big factor of intelligence is the capacity to learn, reason through and understand new information as it's presented. Dead-set in their beliefs and unwilling to listen to anything that isn't aligned with those very specific beliefs, they've been seriously compromised in this department. It also relates to their aptitude in grasping truths, facts and the meanings behind their knowledge, which I'd say is sub-par as well given their statements/declarations. The refusal to accept new information and compare it with old information to reach new or better understood conclusions only displays their lack of intelligence.

lol mine weren't even close. My dad ALWAYS told me to stand up for myself, and especially for other people. If someone was picking on me or someone else, his solution was to hit them and see if they stop. If not, hit them harder. And it IS effective, though sometimes causes suspensions.

So what? They made a different justification than you did, most likely because of some strict religious and moral standards they set up around certain aspects of society. Tell me, why is it OKAY to be gay? What makes YOU right and THEM wrong? The exact same level of justifications they use, only to argue against it.
