How should I start?

Just bought 14-day trial of WoW today, but I haven't a clue what side/race/class I should start as - I'd like something fun to play as for the 2 weeks, since I doubt I'll buy the full game and subscribe if I'm not enjoying it :\

The only particular thing I don't like the thought of would be a class that is primarily a healer so, with that in mind, what would you suggest as a fun class to play for a newcomer? At the moment, I'm looking at the skill trees and the Warlock SEEMS to have some pretty fun abilities (haven't looked at all the skill trees yet though) - would that be a good class to start off as?

EDIT: Also, I can use pre-paid game cards if have The Burning Crusade installed as well, can I?

I have only played on Private Server. But not for long. So you could call me a newcomer. I found Mage pretty fun to play. A lot of skills to choose etc. It's quite an opposite of healer.

Well it is from person to person what class to play? What do you like, the weak high damage dealing mage that launches enormous balls of fire at enemies? Or the mighty warrior that slashes trough enemies like air.

i'd like to point out that all Classes can DPS (even them damned pallies) so getting stuck with a "healer" is kind of impossible, though if picking a priest be prepared to heal instances a lot...

I started as a Rogue and enjopyed ever minute of the game, hoenstly just pick something that looks cool to you, i started as a Troll Rogue, althoguh the racials aren't that great i enjoyed leveling him, and Trolls to this day are my favorite class.

If you want somethign strictly DPS then i'd go either Mage, Warlock, Hunter, or Rogue.

Also, when I buy the retail version, will I have to re-update? At the moment, I have to download a 1.1Gb patch, and I'd rather not have to do it all over again with the retail version :|

I say make a dwarf, their start is very fun to play, or a human, and pick either a mage, or a hunter/paladin class. Then you'll know what people are talking about when they say nerf pallies. As horde you should play tauren, and make it a shaman. For sure.

My first character was an Undead Mage. But, yes, any Undead race is awesome :thup:

I don't agree with that. Horde is much better than Alliance. We can go on like this all day; let's see what Flare thinks.

I need to patch the game first, I don't even know what realms there are ^^

As regards what race, I have enough time to decide on that - according to the patcher, it's gonna be another 5-6 hours AT LEAST, and that certainly won't be done before I go to bed Blood Elves look pretty cool, but I don't know if the trial includes Burning Crusade... Undead are butt-ugly f*ckers (regardless of how awesome they may be)... still, I'll figure that out eventually

Shamans are great- can dps, heal, and tank on occasion, and great fun.
Overall fun with them cant go wrong, or try the druid, which can heal, tank, dps, and shapeshift too, very versatile.

Flare probably doesn't have the expansion with his trial, so he wouldn't be able to make a shaman for the Alliance

Any race but Orc/Troll should be good (their starting location is by far the toughest).
As for class, I suggest you start with something simple, Hunter or Rogue would be the best choice in my opinion. They are easy to play and very strong at low levels. They don't require a good gear and don't have crazy class quests.

Get to 20 in order to get the hang of the game, if you don't like the class you picked can always switch. Pick what seems the best to you. Sounds like a having a pet is cool? Go with hunter. Having a pet and spells is even better? Go with a warlock. Feel like doing a bit of everything? Shaman / Druid. Tanking? Warrior / Paladin. Healing? Priest. DPSing? Mage / Rogue....

The game may seem confusing at first but you will adapt quickly. And remember, you can always ask here questions!

Well, WoW is fully updated, and I'm in the process of creating my new account

I think I'll go for an Undead Warlock (even though they are ugly buggers...) and hope for the best ^^

EDIT: OK, I've got 4 recommended servers now - Alonsus. Blade's Edge, Runetotem and Shadowsong - anyone here on any of those 4 servers, or (if there aren't many of you on said servers) any particular server I should join? I'd like to start in a server where there are at least a few people that I know

You can create up to 8(?) characters on one server; you can create characters on any server of your type. Which type is it? PvE, I'm assuming.
