That guy above me read my mind. who would mind playing Call of duty to learn world war 2?

Really! and Raise of nations. and so many other games. still think they should play doom. it is necessary we never make the mistake of building a base on mars.

*see what games can do? but theres a good side. at least we don't slam people head first into trash cans.*

Honestly, no offense to the people who do play games, if they started to bring video games into most classrooms in place of books, then said students will drown when they get to college and have to read, because they will be unused to reading anything, and more than like be somewhat illiterate. The illiteracy rate is high as it is, does it need to be higher?

The people saying down with books and up with video games are just being lazy and snobs. You just want things done your way. Guess what, the world ain't like that.

People who don't read don't just suffer with reading. I know a lot of people who don't read enough and they also can't speak worth a damn. I mean, they know how to talk, but they cannot vocalize for crap.

Meanwhile, I used to be an avid reader and now spend too much time writing to always read. And I'm actually a fairly good speaker in a crowd.

Video games are fun from time to time, but books should have a higher place in schools.
No books = No civilization.
No civilization = No video games.
No video games = No fun.
No fun = No ideas.
No ideas = No books.
It's an endless circle...

Honestly. If you want to teach students about video games, focus on the CREATING aspect, not PLAYING aspect.

To the people claiming that not reading books make people illiterate and soulless:

The are serveral ways to get information from 1 persons mind to another, just the fact that you like one of those and somebody else likes another method(like me) and doesn't use yours it doesn't mean that person is dumb/stupid/whatever because they disagree with you. That somewhat remind me of the "loud music/cars/president bush/atheists/red socks are the cause of all problems in this world"

And don't start whining about my spelling because english is my 5th language and i've been awake for 48 hours now.

Books shall always be the most useful method. You can't touch your brain as well in any other way. I don't care if some of you hate books--some of my siblings are the same way and I'm not that surprised that they're the least educated of the family.

Video games do touch another spot. Visual and sound together are very useful, but not as much as a book.

Visual alone is lame, but it works ok.

Sound alone is better than Visual alone, but having them together--in lectures and VGs is still better.

Bingo.

This whole "reform education to make learning fun" idea willcome back to get us in the future, when the average person is a total moron because he/she lacks the ability to persevere through something, and instead he/she is used to having the system changed to suit them. One of the most important lessons, if not the most important lesson, is to teach a student how to work hard - integrating video games into the curriculum will remove this aspect of education.

I'd like to see how they teach Math with video games... Math as in high school math.

Find the integral of (xe^x)dx to shoot the gun!

Sorry, couldn't resist...

books are special because they call for someone to imagine what is happening

also, any "screens" are like staring at a lightbulb for hours on end

I'm a writter and where do I write in a BOOK so I don't really get what the probelm is I used to hate books but I found a different subject that was War, Civil War, WW1, WW2, etc. I think they should just assign books that are just intersting or do what I do and get over it and I'm in the 7th grade and I have to tell you if the do video games by the time its done I'll be in high school and like someone else said on the Thread

problem is, Interesting is a subjective term.

Also, I don't think that teachers would intentionally pick out boring books. Unfortunately, the District does most of the book selection

First, people who are awake for such a long time generaly have one or more reasons to be awake for such a long time.

Second, do you have some form of scientific proof that a pile of letters on paper is better at transfering information then a pile of letters on a screen?

There are both crappy books and crappy video games. Just like there are stupid people that read books and stupid people that play video games. Because you encounted one of the latter it doesnt mean that apllies to all of us.

Now there is an interesting point you bring up, and I was wondering if you had any studies/facts/information to back that up

I would suspect that the amount of time reading correlates with IQ or at least with grades, I doubt it is the same for video games
[edit]: Well, who'da thunk it

reading/intelligence
video-games/intelligence

2 separate studies show positive relationships to books and video-games/intelligence

Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
