Sometimes a tub of ice cream or a pot of yoghurt is so tasty that we spend several minutes scraping out the inside and then, if nobody’s looking, lick the lid. Wouldn’t it be even better if we could simply eat the lot, container and all?

It would cut down on the amount of waste we produce and the enjoyment of our food would last that little bit longer. This is exactly what a team of scientists say they have managed to do.

They say the invention of edible food packaging will transform how we eat and cut down the amount of plastic we throw away.

The packaging, created by researchers in France led by Dr David Edwards, is called WikiCells. It’s designed to imitate how fruit and vegetables are ‘packaged’ in nature with a protective outer layer or skin you can eat.

Wouldnt it be a bad idea when it rains? I think it would "melt" when it comes into contact with water.

I would not expect you to leave your food outside, unless you just happen to trip on the sidewalk and drop your grocery bags during a rainy day. And, my guess is that when your saliva touches the wrap, it will melt because of the enzymes, not because of water.

The picture at the lower right corner did mentioned that it keeps water out.

Just imagine 1600 hands had been all over it! And would you eat "chemical" plastic?

No, it wasn't
If you want to eat "creepy plastic" then go ahead than.
Everything is in some way "chemical" because everything consists of chemicals in our world.
Plastic is also a very broad term.
You can make "plastic" from potato starch, we once did it in school. Nothing dangerous there.

I thought the point of the wrap was to keep stuff on the outside out....

In the picture, it says you can wash the packaging just like you'd wash an apple - essentially, it's about the same thing as an apple skin.

Whether you eat it or not, biodegradable wrappers and containers are an excellent idea. That's a point few could argue.

Such yummy goodness ! Just saying
Well, It's generally not a bad idea, to cut down the amount of plastic we throw away. But what kind of price would we pay for it? And is it really safe? Well, don't forget they would use chemicals in the food anyway.

Have you ever eaten:
* sweets
* chewing gum
* something at McDonalds & co
* genetically enhanced food
* most cheap sauces (like BBQ/steak sauce)
* medicine?

You've eaten a lot of "creepy" stuff in your life already.
Even our drinking water is heavily processed with chemicals because it previously ran through a dozen toilets. And now you're drinking, cooking and cleaning with it.

Drink water and toilets water are separated from each other.!
You only drink, cooking from recycled drink water.

    Hmm, how do I change my signature?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
    Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

    Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
    I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
    Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
    So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
    I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
    Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
    Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
