Anyone buy a RPi for a gift? What do you intend for it to be used as? Why did you give it to them? What did you include (besides the obvious OS, power cord), ie: model (why?), wifi?, software?

I have a couple, haven't given them as gifts - uses:
1. asterisk server
2. XBMC client
3. web server (also check if my internet connection is down or my IP address has changed, and if so, to e-mail me the new address for VPN)
4. power management (used to reset my modem/router weekly, and send WOL magic packets if/when needed)
5. cheap signal generator/oscilloscope
6. vpn server

I would includ a 8+gb sd card and a SD card reader/writer, as for power adapters, I tried a couple cheapo ones and gave up - I made my own power adapters (based on the TI lm2596 5v), my asterisk one lives inside of a file server and just leeches off the +5v molex line - (I was getting ~4.6/.7v from various cell phone adapters that I tried to use.. I had success with a 5.2v 800ma adapter, and also a 2.5 amp USB hub) - if you want to buy an adapter, I would suggest getting a 2+ amp tablet charger from a reputable brand (Amazon, Apple, Samsung, etc.)

no wifi/software is really needed (as those depend on its intended use more than anything)

have you had reliable success with those uses? any tinkering at the thought of your own dns server?

they are quite reliable (I haven't had any crashes on mine yet.. the longest-running one I have is my asterisk server, which has run for 2+ months so far) as long as they have a good power supply

XBMC client also works well for most movies, but it can't play 1080p .mkv's that well (I haven't bought the codecs for it though.. perhaps that is the issue)

I already have a DNS server via my file server - I am sure a pi could do it just as well, but I already had that one configured

@ FC - there have been almost a million sold, for all sorts of various purposes - that's pretty much the great thing about it, it's very versatile - not many computers are this reliable, nor have GPIO ports, and none really come close in terms of price/power usage

P.S. - extra IDE cables are good accessories if the receiver is into electronics, as they fit into the GPIO ports.. broken Christmas lights are also good (for the wall-plug part + wire)

All Kidding aside. Its pretty small, has ports if you want plug things directly into like simple motors, lights or devices with IO.

I just ordered one with the goal of making my own personal drone.

Unfortunately the board that I want to buffer between the motors and RPi isn't in stock anymore, but I can wait.

I ordered an Alpha wifi adapter, a couple of brushless motors, a pair of ESC's, some sensors for flight diagnostics, and im also waiting on 'camera board' (a 5 megapixel 1080p 30fps camera attachment for RPi) to come out in the next month or so

Plan on installing aircrack-ng, SSH, and setting up a C&C server for some downtime fun ;)

It'll take a bit coding (love python for being able to handle this), and a decent HDD I'm expecting a shit load of data per flight - will need a real-time patch for linux tho

How come you're so into recipes lately? Never saw this much interest in this topic in the old days of TH.net

Hmm, how do I change my signature?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I am not big on the recipes I am just promoting them - I use the site as a practice place promoting stuff

@tom_mai78101 I must be blind. If I go on my profile I don't see any area to edit the signature; If I go to account details (settings) I don't see any signature area either.
  • The Helper The Helper:
You can get there if you click the bell icon (alerts) and choose preferences from the bottom, signature will be in the menu on the left there https://www.thehelper.net/account/preferences

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
