Question: What is a spell contest?
Answer: A spell contest is a Warcraft mapping related contest, which tests the participants skills in spell making: creating an unique triggered spell which fits the given contests theme.
Before continuing, I shall reveal the theme of this contest:
The theme is: Hell
It's up to you how you interpret hell and what you associate with it.
The theme is pretty generic, so you have almost free hands.
No-one is going to bite your head off if you want to ask whether your spell matches the theme.
Question: Does it have to be point, unit or instant target? (channeling, aura, what else is there)
Answer: It's totally up to you, there are no restrictions here. Want to create a single target “nuke? Why not. An area-damage spell? Acceptable, too.
Question: Does the spell have to be an ultimate spell or a 'normal' spell?
Answer: The spell has to a be a 'normal' spell. This eliminates too "imba" spells titled as "it's just an ultimate".
Question: Can I use JASS or am I only limited to using GUI?
Answer: You can use what's more comfortable to you, if you know JASS better, stick to it, if not, there's nothing wrong with GUI-made spells.
Note! No GUI-JASS hybrids (pseudo locals, etc.)! They are not allowed.
Though, you can use custom script to remove leaks in GUI. You simply have to.
Now you've got the theme and information about coding, what next? Right, grading.
Gradings will be done in three different categories – coding, aesthetics and enjoyability, or wow-factor, if you like.
Grading will be done by me and Mizuio Ken.
Coding – 30 points
The heart of a triggered spell is the code, that's no brainer. Therefore you can earn most points in this category.
- Any unnecessary coding, function calls, fluff stuff (that rhymed) will take points away.
- Leaks are bad, thus, take points away. (this includes lag, as well. More lagg means less points)
- Any coding abnormalities (e.g spell not working properly) will take points away.
Aesthetics – 15 points
Lets be honest, a bad looking spell does not catch attention. The more fitting your chosen special effects are, the more points you will score.
Note! More special effects does not mean more points. Try to be...tasteful.
Balance-ness – 15 points
Is the spell usable, or just some uber stuff. The more fitting it feels for a melee map, the more points.
Spell uniqueness/wow-factor – 10 points
Is your spell something never-before-seen or just a Poison Nova ripoff from Diablo 2? The more unique your spell is, the more points.
General feeling – 5 points
Does your spell have a nice polished tooltip, the spell fits the hero well and all these sorts of little things.
Question: What is the reward if I should happen to win, or something close?
Answer: The first three places will receive reputation from me and Mizuio Ken and from anyone else, who wishes to congratulate.
Minimum of 20 reputation points should be enough, though, does it matter?...
And that's about it.
All you need to know has been said.
Sign up and test your skills!
N.B!
- Regular forum rules apply, no bashing, flaming, double-posting, offtopic talk etc.
- Work-in-process screenshots are welcomed!
