WTF is the difference?!

I mean seriously. Goths are black and Emos cut themselves... is that it? I don't get it... Can anyone explain it to me?

I just couldn't get over it after reading an article of Maddox about Goths. I mean... His "Challenge" kinda applies to Emos as well now that I think about it, which led me to the above topic...

BTW: Also... It would be great if someone could step up to his challenge 'cause I couldn't lol.

Goths wear baggy pants with the chains, emos cut themselves,, and wear tight clothing and cry.

See! That's the whole point! There is no universal description of Goths and Emos so someone might say the reverse of your point!

Which makes me realize there is no obviously simple way to define their differences... but is there anything one could perhaps look for?

I forgot to mention goths generally aren't depressed.

TaHnKie!

Good point. So basically Goths are a fashion fad and Emos use clothes to describe their feelings/personalities...?

Being Emo or Goth is not at all, AT ALL about clothing, it is a state of mind, how one feels about himself and others, which however might result in wearing a particular type of clothing, or acting in a certain manner.

Goths are people who are annoyed by society as some put it, and choose to act and live within their type, or with their kind, obviously how seriously one dedicates himself/herself to being goth is up to them. They aren't dark, they aren't low self esteemed, and they are basically sometimes put in situations were how they act and think, will have them rejected from today's society and normal living.

Emos on the other hand, are ones with low selfesteem, they aren't good enough for the world, perhaps cutting, in some cases or hurting one self, eases the pain they have of their soul, it makes them feel better to take it in, to punish themselves. Many find being very emo as a joke, to think they are respected because of the way they act so dark, however many are put into such situations were they have nothing to rely on, no hope as some would say. Dressing dark and to thier liking might in a manner symbolize that.

How bout you don't label people because the way someone dresses doesn't mean they act a certain way or listen to a certain type of music?

lol i saw lots of teens here in our city where they wear skinny jeans, small t-shirts, applying eye liners and pretending to be emo, but they aren't, they don't cry, and they are just plain stupid, they always get mad, whats with the "emotional" if they easily get angry when u laughed at themm, i really hate emos, they are just over acting even if they are not real emos

How bout you don't label people because the way someone dresses doesn't mean they act a certain way or listen to a certain type of music?
or "you can't judge a book with its cover"?

Difference is there are more emos(or atleast where I live they FAR outnumber the goths. Its just a newer trend. A girl I know dresses like emo but isn't really one, she just likes the style)

Goths are people who know a lot about literature and art, specifically those created during the Gothic stage of artistic development.

Emo is a type of punk music, short for EMOtional.

And, yes, there are also those who cut themselves, worship satan, etc. They are not 'goth' or 'emo' in the strictest sense of the term. They just have something called manic depression.

I learnt that emos are basically people who've had it with life. Basically depressed, lonely, suicidal people.

Yeah true. I might call myself goth, because I listen to goth music. But I wear colorful clothes, no chains or anything.

Same here. I'm a big fan of life :), i wear colourful clothing etc etc. Yet i love goth music, if thats what you want to call it. Though i do love almost any type of music.

I think its best to just not judge, or even remark on a persons "personality". Its their choice, let em be. I've met my fair share of goths, and they all have been pretty good people.

On the other hand emos... scare me a bit. I know... hypocritical... lol :p

Gothic Rock is a music style. The absolutely first gothic song is Bela Lugosi's Dead by the postpunk band Bauhaus. The first band to be labeled pure goth is The Sisters of Mercy, with their album First and Last and Always, but the band went seperate ways and only Andrew Eldritch remained, he tried to get rid off the reputation of being goth, but he only changed the direction of goth slightly with The Sister's second album Floodland. Then, they became Bon Jovi with their third and last studio album Vision Thing, from 1990. They are still touring.

Now, you can't be goth if you don't listen to goth. That's obvious. But listening to goth doesn't make you goth, either. If you dress goth, but don't listen to goth band, if you only listen to Marilyn Manson, The 69 Eyes, Evanescense, HIM, NIN or similiar bands that are often thought of as goth, even if they aren't, you're called a mallgoth, alternatively a mansonite.

There are no rules of how to look if you're goth. Black, is often the key, but not necessary. A goth can wear all white, too. But things that are usual are capes, boots, band t-shirts, deathhawks, sunglasses 24/7, hats, leather jackets, fishnet, etc. But since there's no specific rules, there's no telling what a goth can look like.

Now, being a satanist isn't required for being a goth, nor is it recommended. But is accepted, just as any other religion. For you who don't know, satanism isn't about worshipping satan, satanism tells you to stop believing in god and start believing in yourself because you can make your own decisions. So, a goth acceps you for who you are; if you're a satanist, a christian, a muslim, it doesn't matter; everyone's different and the goth accepts it. The same thing with music taste. No one's better or worse because they listen to a certain kind of music or dress in a certain kind of way. The only one a goth dislikes is a mallgoth, or any kind of poser. Either, you just are something. You don't become. If you enjoy gothic music, if you enjoy gothic literature, the gothic fashion, etc., then you're qualified to being goth. If you already got it in your blood. So you kind of don't chose to be goth. Yes, you can chose not to show it to the world, but you're still goth, because goth's so much more than black.

Now, how do you know the difference between emo and goth? First off: emo isn't a lifestyle in the same way as goth. In fact, you can't "be" emo. You can dress fashioncore and listen to emotional hardcore, but that's about it. The latest wave of emo is My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and I don't know what. The music has changed pretty much, but that's what's called emo today.

Now, I can understand if you still will have issues seperating goths from "emos". Those who dress fashioncore often chose to snatch a lot of ideas from the goth scene these days, so no wonder. Try looking up some gothic and emotional hardcore bands and try to spot the differences, and do remember: if someone tells you Marilyn Manson or NIN is goth, they're wrong, so wrong. Even if they may have borrowed some element, they're not really even close. Try listening to The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Fields of the Nephilim, etc., and you'll know that the difference really is huge. Oh, the Cure has also done some gothic stuff.

And maybe Seth can give his own perspective on the matter?

Or maybe he's too disgusted with this stupidity.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
