No one spells "a lot" correctly because it really does not matter. People get the point, and most people don't know the difference.

The capitals-emphasis should have been placed on "NO ONE," instead of the whole end of the sentence, otherwise it just doesn't make any sense.

Of course it matters. Grammar is important. And you're right, most people DON'T know the difference! That's why they must learn. If they knew the difference, well then they would be spelling it correctly now wouldn't they?

Actually 'A Lot' is a vague term.

You could mean

• a lot also known as a parking lot
• A large quantity
• An area of sand (desert)

And many more...I don't use the term alot...well I try to steer a way from it.
