What does conversion: string to real do?

In this case, it's convert string (name of triggering unit) to a real variable.
It just returns 0.000.

Does it just remove all the letters in the string or something?

It converts numbers strings to actual numbers

A string is a word, a phrase, a sentence. it possible to use numbers in a sentence, but you cant use these numbers for formulas
A real is a number, you can't use words in a sentence.

Let's say player 1 types 34
Even if its a number, he said it, so its a string

But now you could convert that string to a number so you can use it in a formula.

you cant turn letters into numbers, but typed numbers... example
tell the game to transform cat into real..
cat is not a number....
tell the game to transform 300 into real
