Three girls want to buy a CD player down at the local electronics store. The price of the CD player is $30.00. The girls decide to each put in $10.00, and buy it. Yay!
But the next day, the manager of the local electronics store realised that the girls were overcharged! The CD player was actually $25.00! The manager, being nice and all, decided to give back the $5.00 that the girls shouldn't of payed. So he gives the $5.00 to one of the salesmen!
The salesman pockets $2.00 for himself (greedy bastard), and then gives $1.00 to each of the three girls. Problem solved!

But hold on there...let's add this up...
$10.00 from each of the girls, minus the $1.00 they all got back. This makes $9.00 from all the girls, which equals $27.00. Yes?
Then there's the $2.00 that the salesman pocketed. So add that all up: $29.00!

..wait a second...the girls payed $30.00 for the CD player, not $29.00!
Where did the extra dollar go!?!?!?!?!?

On the thread on jmtb, there was no answer and no one had solved it, can YOU??

It's added wrong. Why are you adding the $2 to the total the girl's paid? That was "given back", right? While the girls never got it, it was still taken out of the price. You -2 from $27, getting $25.

This makes $9.00 from all the girls

If they would have paid $25 they would have paid 8.33333333... not $9 each.

They dollar is missing because of... (lol don't know the word in english).
It's "avrundning" in Swedish, maybe some other swede can translate.

No, it's like... hmm...

If you buy something that costs like $99.99 you can "avrunda" it and say it costs $100

I see this has caught every one so far ^_^.

You're trying to get the whole $30 back, 25 is the cost of the CD player, but they payed 30 instead, they each get a dollar back (30 - 3 = 27) but then the other 2 dollars is kept by the greedy man (27+2 = 29), but there's a stray dollar which no one has ever/will ever found/fine :D.

(In other words, you're not just trying to find out how the stray dollar happened, you're trying to get all $30 added up).

It stumped me, and it stumped everyone xD.

I still don't understand why you're adding the stolen 2 dollars to the price of the CD. The CD still only cost 25. The store still only received 25 for it, since they gave 5 back. Whether or not that 5 reached the girl's hands has nothing to do with it. I see every dollar accounted for...

Seth is right, y are you adding the 2 stolen dollars? Your supposed to subtract them to get the cost of the cd.

NO :D!

I already explained in an earlier post, you're not trying to get the cost of the cd player, you're trying t get all $30 back :D.

This riddle is clearly confusing :p.

(Though in a way, yes, Seth is right :p.. almost as always (Ax3))..

~Jindo

EDIT: Just read Seth's post.. he is completely right :p.

Everyone rep Seth while I find a harder riddle xD.

EDIT 2: But how come there's only $29 after added up? Even though you can get see all $30, can you (following the puzzle) add up to the $30.

I don't see how this is so complicated and why you only say seth is somehow right, he is right right. I also don't understand why you keep on with your 27+2 stuff, makes no sense to me.

You're forumla is wrong. The 2 should be subtracted, not added.

Common sense. Take 3 away, add 2. A dollar is missing. But the 2 dollars was NOT added back to the price, or the amount of money the girls spent. It was given back and if anything is missing, the 2 dollars are because the cashier pocketed it.

Exactly. For once I am on Seth's side about something

writing up the full explanation...

Code:
$30.00 = original amount paid
$25.00 = real price
$2.00 = stolen
$1.00 x 3 = what the girls got at the end

So the whole things looks like...
$30.00 - $1.00 x 3 = $25.00 + $2.00
The original paid price - the rebate = Price of CD + stolen amount

which is

$30.00 = $25.00 + $2.00 + $1.00 x 3
The price of the CD + the amount stolen + the rebate = $30.00 which is the original amount paid

So...

$30.00 - $1.00 x 3 = $27.00 <--- the actual amount paid (original less rebate)

which is equal to

$25.00 + $2.00 (stolen) = $27.00 <---- paid at the end

Actual amount paid = price of CD + stolen money

------

Now tell me, how do you manage to
$27.00 + $2.00 = $29.00

when the logic clearly states that
$30.00 - ($1.00 x 3) = $25.00 + $2.00 + $1.00 x 3 - ($1.00 x 3)
$27.00 = $25.00 + $2.00
$27.00 - $2.00 = $25.00

explain your logic

Using the logic from the riddle:
Code:
CD Player = $30.00
Girls paid at first = $10.00
Girls = 3

$10.00 x 3 = $30.00

Real price of CD Player = $25.00

$30.00 - $25.00 = $5.00 which is the amount overcharged

Salesperson pocketed $2.00

$5.00 - $2.00 = $3.00 what each girl will get at the end
$5.00 = $2.00 + $3.00

to summarize at this point

$30.00 = $25.00 + $5.00
$30.00 = $25.00 + $2.00 + $3.00
$30.00 = $25.00 + $2.00 + ($1.00 x 3)

Which means:
$30.00 - ($1.00 x 3) = $25.00 + $2.00 + ($1.00 x 3) - ($1.00 x 3) minus both sides by ($1.00 x 3)

OR

($10.00 x 3) - ($1.00 x 3) = $25.00 + $2.00 + ($1.00 x 3) - ($1.00 x 3)

which equals (solution)
$27.00 = $25.00 + $2.00
OR
($9.00 x 3) = $25.00 + $2.00

According to the flawed logic:

$10.00 x 3 - $1.00 x 3 = $27.00
$27.00 + $2.00 = $29.00

When combined with our equation of $27.00 = $25.00 + $2.00:
$25.00 + $2.00 + $2.00 = $29.00

Which is

$25.00 + 2 x $2.00 = $29.00

Where did the extra $2.00 come from? We only have 1
stolen amount which is already included in the $27.00
as proven in our solution.

Guys, you don't get it... His 'formula' is to confuse you. :p The correct way is what Seth posted and Jindo knows it... the way of counting in the riddle is only a trickery...

I know that he's right, people do see every dollar, the real question is when added up, why do you end up with 29 and not 30? :p.

(btw, this isn't my riddle :p).

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
