A California sushi chef and the restaurant in which he worked have been charged with illegally serving meat from an endangered Sei whale, the Justice Department said on Thursday.

Kiyoshiro Yamamoto, 45, and the parent company of the popular restaurant The Hump in Santa Monica were charged late on Wednesday with violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act which makes it illegal to sell any kind of whale meat.

The case stemmed from informants who ordered whale meat at the restaurant in October 2009 and evolved into a sting operation by U.S. wildlife and customs officials who observed whale meat being served at the restaurant last week.

"Someone should not be able to walk into a restaurant and order a plate of an endangered species," U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said in a statement.

The real bad thing is they did not charter some illegal hunting operation to get the whale, I read they bought it out of the trunk of some car :)

UPDATE: L.A. eatery charged with serving whale meat closes

(Reuters) - A Los Angeles-area sushi restaurant that made international headlines after it was charged with serving endangered whale meat will close forever as a "self-imposed punishment," according to a statement on its website.

The parent company of the The Hump, a popular Santa Monica restaurant, and sushi chef Kiyoshiro Yamamoto were charged on March 11 with violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which makes it illegal to sell whale meat.

Federal prosecutors have said that the case stemmed from informants who were served whale meat at The Hump in October 2009 and evolved into a sting operation by U.S. wildlife and customs officials.

The federal charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in federal prison and a maximum fine of $100,000 for an individual or $200,000 for an organization.

More.

We were talking about something like this in Biology class. Is it our right to further play a hand in nature? Should we be trying to save endangered species?

Yeah of course!
Soon there is no nature left to save/discovery. If we don't do something about it.
Well, Sevion.. There be no whale left. If we don't try to save them from hungry humans.

Exactly, Lambda. What if Nature is making that species die off? Nature can create, can nature not also destroy?

How is it our exclusive right to play the role of Nature/God?

If you destroy for the animals, It's your fault. Isn't that right?
and that means you need to pay back for that. hmm
That's nothing to do with playing God or whatever.
But if nature making that itself. that's another matter!

Just because we have caused a species to go endangered does not always mean we should bring them out of endangerment.

If we do, we are playing God. We are messing with Nature.

Well, we always have aliens out there..
Maybe they can help us, If needed

But you see. We always have each other.. It's true, Isn't it?

No, we don't. We, messing with nature when we exterminate species for our enjoy, and so on. So, we should protect before evrything be extinct. If that's too late then sure we should no play god. and bring back "animals such as dinosaurs"

Bah, screw that self righteousness crap.
You are talking as if we are not part of "Nature", we still are just like any other animal on this damn planet.

Either you talk about nature as if we where not part of it, as if we are unnatural, and say that we should put our nose in it or you say that it is survival of the fittest and that it was our right to do that.

We are still just animals, if you are going to say that we are not part of nature then we should not need to care about it.
On the other hand, if we are then we somehow rely on it as anything else in it.

I would say that I don't give a crud about it, just as long as I am not harmed in the process, that is survival of the fittest in all it's glory:p

We have aliens!?! Where!?!? Proofs plox.

We always have each other. That's true. That whale has his/her whale buddy. They have each other. Well?

The reason many species have become endangered does have a big part caused by humans. However, you forget, to survive, we must eat. Humans are an invasive species. We mate and thus have more humans. Over time we created a LOT of humans. We expanded and invaded others' habitats. It's survival of the fittest. And at the moment, we are. Our biggest muscle? Our brain. Some times nature is telling a species to die. Who are we to interfere?

Why can we change, destroy, protect, and much moar than other species? Other species are just as capable. We are capable in our own way just as they are in theirs.

Just a rumor so far. So, I can`t tell you moar than that. lol

Well, if a whale been killed of a human or hunted. The other whales can't help their buddy at all. They can't even walk, fly, run to rescue their buddy. They can't do anything. "Just an example" But we can rescue.
You see.. Sevion, we have it much easy then a whale. And that means we can help each other and help the nature without playing god. And we need to do that. I can't call it for interfere

Some times nature is telling a species to die
Sometimes yeah. but mostly its humans fault.

Other species are just as capable. We are capable in our own way just as they are in theirs.
But they don't destroy nature like we do. They don't have any weapons to kill a human easy way. Right? hmm

Well maybe sometimes Nature using us as a tool to kill off species. We are part of Nature. Who says Nature isn't making us kill off the species? And sometimes to leap forward, you must take a few steps back. Maybe by putting a species into endangerment and letting it thrive again will bring it to be stronger and thus we are destroy Nature, but also helping it thrive?

They have weapons. They have their massive bodies to use. It's like any endangered Tiger. They have their claws, teeth, etc. They even have muscle strength over us. What do we have? Our bodies and our mind. So, all in all, it evens itself out. Until, that is, we bring technology into the mix. Then we are vastly superior (generally speaking).
