General Researchers to Study Avalanches By Burying Live Pigs in Snow - and watching them die

The use of live animals in scientific research has long been a testy subject (right out the gate with a pun, hm?), but ongoing experiments on lab mice don't seem to grab too many headlines anymore. No, it takes a particularly controversial or cruel-seeming experiment to get animal rights activists into the papers these days.

Take for instance, the most recent study that's stirring the ire of animal lovers everywhere: European researchers have planned an experiment in which 29 live pigs are to be buried under snow, and where they will essentially be observed dying. The experiment was set to begin last week, but has been postponed due to a firestorm of protest.

The study was an attempt to determine what factors make it possible for humans to "survive an avalanche in an air pocket until rescued without suffering permanent brain damage," according to the Canadian Press. The researcher's goal is to better understand how exactly air pockets are used to aid in survival, and in the long run, be able to present better guidelines on how people can survive avalanches.

I guess it's an important to know these things and usually I'm
ok with a few mice dying.... But this I believe, crosses the line. Watching 29 pigs die slowly from hypothermia/lack of oxygen? Seems sorta inhumane.

I must say I do not support this project.

That's Just a bullshit research and cruel
I don't think you have any time to put you in a air pocket
anyway, when a avalanche are on top of you.

During the nuclear tests of the 50s the US government (and probably the Russians too) used live pigs during explosions to simulate humans (when they weren't using actual humans!). Very often the pigs would later die of radiation poisoning.

 it's as if scientists/government only care about humans and not animals. I would say humans should have priority, but animals should not be harmed unnecessarily like in this case.

Dunno virtual simulators or something. I jsut feel that it is wrong to use animals.

You can't believe for a second that they got such advanced simulators anywhere on earth?
Since pigs are as close as humans in their metabolism and overall design as can be I am just glad that they don't use humans^^
If you think that that is ruff, then you have not been on a pig farm ever in your life, and no I am not guessing that;)

Avalanches don't happen by accident, really!
It's humans fault not pigs.
So pigs not need to suffer because what humans do.. right?

An avalanche is a rapid flow of snow down a slope, from either natural triggers or human activity.

Avalanches occur often without any interaction, its just snow piling up too much, like tectonic planes causing earthquakes.

Rather test on animals than humans, take that PETA.

But mostly it's humans fault and be near a avalanche terrain its
Nuts!
So it dosent need any  test

Some people like to climb mountains, go skiing, and snowboard, go figure.

Avalanches happen naturally... Sure, there's INCREASED avalanche activity due to human interaction, but you can't really say they're (avalanches) caused by humans.

Well, It's our pleasure but it doesn't mean a pig need suffer because of that.

A human need be more careful.. That's it!

Sometimes it's human who caused it.. really

The truth lies somewhere between these extremes. For the most part avalanches are creatures of habit - they start under fairly predictable conditions and they follow the same tracks year after year. As long as you follow some basic rules, you need never put yourself at risk.

I fucking hate protesters.

Just shut up and watch. Its for science!

Ok yeah, I agree. The pigs can be either used for science or eaten - I would prefer science seeings how there are only 29 of them (Not like 100+ or something).

And no, pigs aren't going extinct anytime soon.

I'm not a fan of peta or something like that, but I hate fucking cruelty to
animals. and that's not science! It's pure cruelty

No way  @undeadorcjerk

Ok yeah, I agree.
I don't agree a human can avoid the avalanche.

I'm gonna agree with FireCat here. I'm not a fan of PETA either. I just think its just cruel to slowly kill pigs from hypothermia and lack of oxygen.

When we eat pigs they are killed off quickly. They suffer in this experiment.

Well when people die of being too cold, they can't examine anything, if they watch the process they can find new techniques to make people have a chance of survival.

News portal has been retired. Main page of site goes to Headline News forum now
  • The Helper The Helper:
I am working on getting access to the old news portal under a different URL for those that would rather use that for news before we get a different news view.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Easily done

  • The Helper The Helper:
https://www.thehelper.net/pages/news/ is a link to the old news portal - i will integrate it into the interface somewhere when i figure it out
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Need to try something
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hopefully this won't cause problems.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hmm
  • Ghan Ghan:
I have converted the Headline News forum to an Article type forum. It will now show the top 20 threads with more detail of each thread.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    See how we like that.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do not see a way to go past the 1st page of posts on the forum though
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is OK though for the main page to open up on the forum in the view it was before. As long as the portal has its own URL so it can be viewed that way I do want to try it as a regular forum view for a while
  • Ghan Ghan:
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with the pagination.
  • Ghan Ghan:
It SHOULD be there so I think it might just be an artifact of having an older style.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I switched it to a "Standard" article forum. This will show the thread list like normal, but the threads themselves will have the first post set up above the rest of the "comments"
  • The Helper The Helper:
I don't really get that article forum but I think it is because I have never really seen it used on a multi post thread
  • Ghan Ghan:
RpNation makes more use of it right now as an example: https://www.rpnation.com/news/
