Officials warn communities could be under water for more than a week

1,000 people rescued from town of Emerald in last 24 hours

Residents warned of danger of crocodiles and snakes in flooded homes

More than 200,000 people have been affected in Queensland after the area suffered the worst flooding for 50 years.

The flood zone now stretches over an area bigger than France and Germany combined, officials said today.

Thousands of homes and businesses across Queensland state have been inundated with water after days of pounding rain caused swollen rivers to overflow.

The entire population of two towns was forced to evacuate as water swamped their communities, cutting off roads and devastating crops.

1. You have to ask?

2. Because nature is, many times, unpredictable. They could be flooded as well...

Any such change destroys life... There are land organisms that will die because of the flood. Which will change the food chain.

Depending on the level of change, this can be very devastating to the ecosystem...

It kills many organisms and lessens the diversity of the types of organisms.

As my Biology teacher always says, "Diversity creates Stability".

Parts of Australia are desert, but those are in areas where people don't live. A lot of Queensland is of a tropical climate. Flooding and other bad weather isn't too uncommon, just flooding to this degree is rather rare. That's what they get for living in a tropical climate.

People who live in Australia mostly live in coastal regions, unless it's for the convenience of resources, such as mining.
