Well lets put it this way: I was fiddling around with windows and was trying to change the Interface and 2 dlls to make Dreamscene work on Home Premium...I backuped all the files. It didn't work, but that was no big deal since evereything else worked fine, just as before.
Today I installed a new Nvidia Forceware driver, 162.22 for Vista 32-bit.
I restarted my PC and wanted to acces the menu via Desktop rightclick -->settings or whatever its called. But all the text was missing... I don't think it has to do with the Dreamscene thing, more with the driver. It should work actually though.
Anyone know a soluttion, should I deinstall the driver?

Heres a picture:

Oh and don't complain about the colors, I used Paint :D

I'm pretty sure it's a virus, did you scan for viruses? ... and defragging your disk? :D

I doubt the Nvidia drivers are responsible for this mess, it's most probably due to your own tampering: which DLLs did you replace? Did you reboot after installing / restoring them?

Are there any error messages show in the event viewer?

I don't think its not the drivers, it worked before.
I replaced the themecpl.dll and the themecpl.dll.mui and added dreamscene .dll and .dll.mui
Also, I added a registry entry...
No entries in the error viewer regarding that problem

And I don't think its a virus, I can still acces the settings, only the text is gone.

Oh, themecpl.dll ... now that's a coincidence.

Is only that part of the control panel not working or do the other entries also miss some text? Did you at least use a german DLL to replace your own? If I were you, I'd put everything back the way you had it.

Of course it's not a virus...

That might be the problem, that it was english. But it worked for quite a while without problems.
And can I just run repair.exe or something?

Well didn't you back up the DLL's before you replaced them?

I mean themecpl.dll = Theme Control Panel, which is obviously where its messed up.

I don't know of any solutions though [Dont have vista], might try google? (Although this topic probrably isn't very common)

I did back it up as themecpl.dll.original...but I can't find it

EDIT: Woohoo I repaired it. The Problem was the themecpl.dll.mui, the interface file.

News portal has been retired. Main page of site goes to Headline News forum now
  • The Helper The Helper:
I am working on getting access to the old news portal under a different URL for those that would rather use that for news before we get a different news view.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Easily done
    +1
  • The Helper The Helper:
https://www.thehelper.net/pages/news/ is a link to the old news portal - i will integrate it into the interface somewhere when i figure it out
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Need to try something
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hopefully this won't cause problems.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hmm
  • Ghan Ghan:
I have converted the Headline News forum to an Article type forum. It will now show the top 20 threads with more detail of each thread.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    See how we like that.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do not see a way to go past the 1st page of posts on the forum though
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is OK though for the main page to open up on the forum in the view it was before. As long as the portal has its own URL so it can be viewed that way I do want to try it as a regular forum view for a while
  • Ghan Ghan:
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with the pagination.
  • Ghan Ghan:
It SHOULD be there so I think it might just be an artifact of having an older style.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I switched it to a "Standard" article forum. This will show the thread list like normal, but the threads themselves will have the first post set up above the rest of the "comments"
  • The Helper The Helper:
I don't really get that article forum but I think it is because I have never really seen it used on a multi post thread
  • Ghan Ghan:
RpNation makes more use of it right now as an example: https://www.rpnation.com/news/

    What do you think Tom?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
I will have to get used to this.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
The latest news feed looks good
  • The Helper The Helper:
I would like to see it again like Ghan had it the first time with pagination though - without the pagination that view will not work but with pagination it just might...
