Yea I just built my first one a couple days ago. Its alot easier than you'd think. Just make sure you install the stuff in the right order or you'll have to take things back out just to reach certain areas. Like the back panel to the case, put that in before the mobo. lol I had to take back out he mobo just to put it on.

Once you get it all working and turn it on hold down the delete key and in the BIOS make sure that it boots from disk. Look at your motherboard manual and it will tell you how to do it. Then you just put in xp disk and install it. After its installed restart compy and go back to BIOS again and set it to boot from harddrive. Then you should search for the latest drivers for all your hardware and download/install them. Chipset drivers for the mobo, you should download first.

GPU- graphics processing unit(graphics card)
PSU- powersupply
HDD- harddrive
DVD burner
MOBO- motherboard
CPU- central processing unit
RAM- random acess memory

get parts from www.newegg.com
You MUST be sure all the parts you choose are compatible.

Recently I've been reading some articles concerning cpus and amd/intel platforms.
To sum it all up :
PhenomX4 (the first generation ) is actually a weak core , but since you should be looking into X4 processors, the fact that it has 4 cores should compensate it's slow speed in newer applications that use not only 2 cores but 3-4 , otherwise ANY ( even the oldest ones ) dual core intel processor is way faster.
they overclock rather poor and i'd not recommend buying those, as i've already said the only reason is budget 4 cores.

Phenom2 X4 on the other hand overclock really well and in their power they finally reach and even in some applications surpass intel Core2 ( Core i7 is still unreachable in most apps and in the majority of games ). I'd recommend to get one of lower models of Phenom2 and overclock them, but

if you dont want to overclock just get intel Core2 Q8xxx.

as for the amount of ram - the question is solved. 2x2 gb ddr800 if u dont want to upgrade, 4gb ddr 800 if u want to add 4 more. ( although check the platform u are planning to use, some mobos may have problems with that )

as for the videocard i'd advise you to economize on it and buy the best processor/ram/mobo/hdd you can since the only way to play , let's say , Crysis is to get a TOP videocard, and if you're not planning to play crysis at maximal settings - dont even think of getting anything stronger than Radeon 4770 which is the best buy at the moment, nothing can catch up with it in the price segment, and sometimes these cards with slight overclock surpass 4850s ;]. As for Nvidia , they are better at high-end at the moment, I'd not advise you to get any GTS250 which is 9800GTX+ which is 9800GTX which is 8800GTS512... mass rename ftw.

It's thermal paste. You put it on your processor before you put the heatsink on top of it.
