What are your thoughts about the modern method of communication?

I <3 it.

It's an easy way to send small messages to people to notify them about stuff.
It's a good way to kill time in class.
It's a good way to talk to people instead of IMing, when not on the comp.
It's a good way to communicate with people without others hearing your conversation.
It's good for talking trash about people on the subway to your friends that are right next to you.

I'm probably gonna get a phone soon so I can text, one of the cheap unlimited text plans :p
It gets boring and class and a lot of people have asked me to text but I can't cause I have no phone... Go peer pressure!
I think text is pretty cool, usually a private conversation, and fun!

It's expencive. While it's nice to get text messages, they rarely contain anything useful.

However, sometimes they are useful, and sometimes it's the only way to keep in touch with friends you don't see often.

My girlfriend texts me all the time. It kinda irritates me when I'm in a bad mood or have to do things. I liked things when I didn't have a phone, but I guess that's how I got to meet my girlfriend.

I don't think texts were meant to be useful. Just another way to pass time and meet new people.

Other way around here. I wish my girlfriend had a cell phone, damnit.

Yea, the idea sounds cute, but wait till she gets one. She's going to text you all the time. Just think for a second - a constant conversation of nothingness. It's not so bad for me anymore though. We go out a lot more than we used to. It's nicer to interact in real-life.

Btw, I have no clue what the first choice means. Are you playing with our heads, Varine?

Agreed. It is good for many reasons..

Someone plans on dying for their texting rights.
lol

I agree though in person is better for relationships, but texting is quicker than a phone. Texting, outside of relationship, can help you meet others, as for some reason it's easier to text things than say them. Also kill time and have fun, what not.

Not for me. I would love to talk to her any time. Its fine with me, haha.

I text 500x more than I call. With riding a motorcycle, and 90% of my friends riding too, its much easier to drop a text so they can get it when they stop. I enjoy it much more, too, easier to plan stuff as you can keep records of stuff.

I wouldn't mind it so much if anyone said something useful. It's always like hey, and then I send back hey and they send something like what are you doing? and then I'll say nothing and they'll say oh and that's the end of it. Total waste of my forty or so seconds and 25 cents.

For important things I notice no one ever texts me. Usually they never call either, I'll just see them sometime and they'll inform me that my job was outsourced or something.

I don't text and I know that I <3 it. (I have to pay for each, and my phone is an emergency phone).

If you think about it, it's a great way to pass quick information when you're mobile. The only alternative besides a phone call, bringing a laptop around. However, I think that a lot of the time over the phone is wasted time. You have to establish the "hello"s, who is who, and what you're trying to tell them. Texting automatically establishes who is who, and a "hello" is not really needed.

Plus, texting gets rid of the formality of a phone call. There's no awkward moments, simply information/thoughts, and you can multitask while you're doing it. A phone call takes your full attention, and usually means you're wasting minutes if you are simply trying to talk casually. You can take as long as you want to text.

From the forth of september to the forth of october I sent ~8200 text messages. Don't ask me how it happened, I'm not quite sure.

My brother had a phone, it costed about 100 dollars, and you had to pay 25 dollars monthly, if you wanted, for unlimited texting and I think minutes (not long distance). So no contract. But he lost it, and hasn't bought another one :p

I have unlimited text, internet, and mms messages.
I get random pictures sent to me in the middle of the night by random people, it's lulz.

I rarely call people. Only when I have to talk and I can't get my ass there and he/she can't get his/her here.

I have 1000 text message limit per month, and my call limit is 7 minutes. Costs 5-7€ in a month.

Nice to communicate with your close ones, and if you don't like to write, well, you can always buy a microphone and talk over Ventrilo or TeamSpeak xD

News portal has been retired. Main page of site goes to Headline News forum now
  • The Helper The Helper:
I am working on getting access to the old news portal under a different URL for those that would rather use that for news before we get a different news view.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Easily done
    +1
  • The Helper The Helper:
https://www.thehelper.net/pages/news/ is a link to the old news portal - i will integrate it into the interface somewhere when i figure it out
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Need to try something
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hopefully this won't cause problems.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hmm
  • Ghan Ghan:
I have converted the Headline News forum to an Article type forum. It will now show the top 20 threads with more detail of each thread.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    See how we like that.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do not see a way to go past the 1st page of posts on the forum though
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is OK though for the main page to open up on the forum in the view it was before. As long as the portal has its own URL so it can be viewed that way I do want to try it as a regular forum view for a while
  • Ghan Ghan:
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with the pagination.
  • Ghan Ghan:
It SHOULD be there so I think it might just be an artifact of having an older style.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I switched it to a "Standard" article forum. This will show the thread list like normal, but the threads themselves will have the first post set up above the rest of the "comments"
  • The Helper The Helper:
I don't really get that article forum but I think it is because I have never really seen it used on a multi post thread
  • Ghan Ghan:
RpNation makes more use of it right now as an example: https://www.rpnation.com/news/

    What do you think Tom?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
I will have to get used to this.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
The latest news feed looks good
  • The Helper The Helper:
I would like to see it again like Ghan had it the first time with pagination though - without the pagination that view will not work but with pagination it just might...
