It's too bad there wasn't a new case design, but I'm upgrading from my 3GS anyway.

Here's some of the features:

A5 dual-core (SGX543MP2, possible 1GB RAM)
8 Megapixel camera, 1080p video recording
Siri, your virtual assistant

And apparently it's the first phone to "intelligently switch between two cell antennas".

Indeed that was disappointing that Apple hasn't updated the iPod touch line with the A5.

Anyone seen the Infinity Blade 2 demo in the Keynote? The graphics are amazing... check it out here. (54:26-57:50)

They claim the iPhone 4S's CPU offers up to 2x better performance than the previous iPhone and that the dual-core GPU offers up to 7x better perform. The iPad 2's claims were the same except it was up to 9x better graphics, which suggests either the SGX543MP2 in the 4S is down clocked, or the 4S's CPU is down clocked and is thus more of a bottleneck than with the iPad 2, or both.

The camera improvements they've made are pretty great, too. Look here, and scroll to the bottom for downloadable high-res images.

Siri actually looks pretty useful too.

It might not appeal to the vast user base that currently has an iPhone 4 then, but to those still using older models or who've never had an iPhone/smartphone (like me) it's got something going for it. Certainly, the camera upgrades are very appealing to me, and I like that for once they aren't bringing out yet another new model after just a year. More of an upgrade instead.

The Samsung Galaxy S III

It might very well do that spec-wise although I doubt it could do anything but compete (at best) graphics-wise. Why would a smartphone need to be that fast? The iPhone 4S will fly with only a dual-core 800MHz CPU. Surely battery life is more important...?

Well for talk time that's fine, but I know I'd be playing games in class and while commuting so it'd probably kill it relatively fast. I want it where I can use it all day and then not have to charge it for another day or two like with my 4 year old blackberry.

I've heard from some of the reviews that under heavy use it lasts about 16 hours. I'll have to wait until I have mine until I can see how long it lasts me.

The 4S has only 500 MB of RAM- it doesn't need more. iOS is optimized so well that for the most part, nobody can even tell the difference.
Android phones need sheer brute power. Nobody knows what Google is going to do with Android, and so battery-unfriendly RAM and powerful specs are the only way Samsung (And other firms) can futureproof their phones. iOS runs far smoother than Android, regardless of the specs.

I'm guessing everyone with <iPhone 4 will upgrade to this. I have an iPhone 4, and despite the incredible camera, dual core processor and better antenna on the 4S, I don't think it's worth a few months of living in a box.

I've just got mine. I can't wait to set it up. I've been messing around with my folks 4S's for a few days and they're great. I played Rage, Infinity Blade, and Real Racing 2 on them. The retina display really makes games look great, I'm hoping the former two will have updates soon for improved graphics. Real Racing 2 has been updated but not with anything really impressive yet. Siri's pretty sweet.
