Hmm... A friend needs a laptop, for both casual and conservative gaming. By conservative I mean stable frame rate, on games such as Team fortress 2. He said a stable 20 fps is fine, but it's mainly for casual use. IE: School.

His price range is around $1500, and he said even that may be a bit much.

well.. i heard the Asus K42 series is one of the best for budget gaming.

this is what i own (runs LoL at 60+ fps)

it has an i3, decent enough for todays games i think.
i cant find prices for it though.

this k42-jv at Newegg though costs $1000, but is a lot more powerful than the k42-jk

Pros: This laptop is great for the price point. i bought it because i needed a mobile laptop for school, and also i wanted to replace my desktop with it and be able to compromise and play current games at decent levels.

>GeForce GTX 285M (best single graphics card for a laptop currently)

GeForce GTX 480M is better.

I believe the ATI Radeon HD 5870M is just behind (or very similar to) the GTX 480M but runs much cooler.

not the laptop version, that's the desktop - I don't think it would be easy to make an accurate review of that, and laptop versions and desktop versions are only similar in name

I know, but according to my observations at notebookcheck, the GTX 480 is only slightly ahead in most games then the HD 5870M.

The link lists many games and many graphics cards, the GTX 480M and 5870M are in the top section. You can click the name of the GTX 480M and 5870M and open them up and read a description of the card as well as some specs, if you scroll down, it lists the games this card has been tested on and in what system.

I'd say they are pretty similar, I'd imagine the 5870M runs a lot cooler than the GTX 480M.

that's the misconception that I was pointing out.. you can more or less measure raw performance, but not heat/efficiency in a laptop, since the laptop itself will be different physically, and the shape/cooling of the laptop will have more of an impact then the actual card
