Senior scientists have criticised the “appalling irresponsibility” of researchers in China who have deliberately created new strains of influenza virus in a veterinary laboratory.

They warned there is a danger that the new viral strains created by mixing bird-flu virus with human influenza could escape from the laboratory to cause a global pandemic killing millions of people.

Lord May of Oxford, a former government chief scientist and past president of the Royal Society, denounced the study published today in the journal Science as doing nothing to further the understanding and prevention of flu pandemics.

“They claim they are doing this to help develop vaccines and such like. In fact the real reason is that they are driven by blind ambition with no common sense whatsoever,” Lord May told The Independent.

“The record of containment in labs like this is not reassuring. They are taking it upon themselves to create human-to-human transmission of very dangerous viruses. It’s appallingly irresponsible,” he said.

Holy shit, Scientists are "truly insane" No diseases like this should ever be created!.
Seriously, sooner or later they will escape! "Just one tiny fly" Just Imagine.

Of course it should be done, how else would we know if we can or not?

A disease like what? You dont know anything about that virus. And neither does the rest of the world. For all I know it could be harmless or the most horrible thing or whatever...

Seriously, deadly diseases created in the lab are much worse, because if it is released somehow and manages to spread. Why even take such a chance? It's Just nuts

How do you know that its deadly? Are you already affected?

That really didn't answer why deadly diseases are much worse if made in a lab, you just went on to if they spread. But that's the same case of natural viruses (but we all know viruses were made by the government to kill homosexuals and blacks).

Hopefully it's released. We need a good pandemic to reduce the world population

Eh Seriously, natural viruses doesn't mix with each other!

mixing bird-flu virus with human influenza could escape from the laboratory to cause a global pandemic killing millions of people.

Viruses naturally evolve on their own to do the same thing, so them not mixing doesn't keep them from being able to affect different animals or to develop more dangerous complications that come with it.

China. Sigh.
I wouldn't mind if, like, ANY other country does this. It's just that China.. China isn't exactly one to follow safety procedures..

I guess I can only hope they learn enough from it to help. But sounds to risky.

Let's all take a step back and remember, for one, this virus is made in China, and therefore liable to not work right. Second, they have a serious record for just saying they did shit they clearly didn't, like a extra-vehicle space walk. They also have things like coins, chairs, blocks of pavement, and various other things that inexplicably explode for no fucking reason, along with knockoffs of products THEY build, cities the size of LA with no one but store keepers living there, and a huge concrete aircraft carrier in the middle of the desert.

News portal has been retired. Main page of site goes to Headline News forum now
  • The Helper The Helper:
I am working on getting access to the old news portal under a different URL for those that would rather use that for news before we get a different news view.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Easily done
    +1
  • The Helper The Helper:
https://www.thehelper.net/pages/news/ is a link to the old news portal - i will integrate it into the interface somewhere when i figure it out
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Need to try something
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hopefully this won't cause problems.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hmm
  • Ghan Ghan:
I have converted the Headline News forum to an Article type forum. It will now show the top 20 threads with more detail of each thread.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    See how we like that.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do not see a way to go past the 1st page of posts on the forum though
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is OK though for the main page to open up on the forum in the view it was before. As long as the portal has its own URL so it can be viewed that way I do want to try it as a regular forum view for a while
  • Ghan Ghan:
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with the pagination.
  • Ghan Ghan:
It SHOULD be there so I think it might just be an artifact of having an older style.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I switched it to a "Standard" article forum. This will show the thread list like normal, but the threads themselves will have the first post set up above the rest of the "comments"
  • The Helper The Helper:
I don't really get that article forum but I think it is because I have never really seen it used on a multi post thread
  • Ghan Ghan:
RpNation makes more use of it right now as an example: https://www.rpnation.com/news/

    What do you think Tom?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
I will have to get used to this.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
The latest news feed looks good
  • The Helper The Helper:
I would like to see it again like Ghan had it the first time with pagination though - without the pagination that view will not work but with pagination it just might...
