But isn't it true that new ideas arise from the foundation of previous ideas? Creativity is usually the collaboration of multiple ideas to create something new.
I think this debate is going to be about copyright, patenting of ideas etc(since you used the word plagiarism). So I want to ask what you mean by "stealing from many" How can a group own an "idea", isn't ownership/copyright usually excluded to one individual/entity?

With that being said, I found a very interesting video on TED regarding copyright and plagiarism here

Research isn't stealing from people... it's research. You don't pass off their information and findings as your own when you do research, if you do then you've been doing it wrong all these years.

When you do research you look for previous findings or opinions on a subject, cite them and then write your own analysis or inferences based on what other people have concluded or written.

I'll be closing this if you don't have a good rebuttal because right now it just seems like you're misunderstanding the words "research" and "plagiarism".

Not to be a bitch here sqrage, but what I get of what you are saying there is that when someone research they do is basically analyze old data to create new data, please correct me if I'm wrong^^

If I am writing a paper on say the theory of relativity I would not be claiming the actual information but present my opinions and conclusions about it and then make sure to mention that it is not me who came up with it, that is a whole other thing than just taking the information right away and saying that it is mine^^

I stand for that research is not equal to stealing at all, at least not when it comes to theoretical work.

Oh, and it would be really weird if anyone who ever built a car or bike would be accused of stealing the wheel:nuts:

I'm pretty sure that sqrage is saying the same thing sam.

Research means finding something out. If other people have already found out what your looking for then you can just read what they said. If not then you find out by making your own experiments. If you want to report on the finding of yourself or others you can. You might have to cite your sources if you haven't found out the information that you are presenting, like everyone has said.

Research and stealing aren't connected.

you can easily steal from many, just remove your works cited page

and you can also research from just 1 person's work, provided that you cite it properly

so im going with they are unrelated and what your friend said doesn't make much sense..

i think he thought it was similar to

"The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic."

And

"Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god."

So he tried to think of something similiar, which it isnt, research is a different thing then plagiarism, in the quotes, they all refer to one thing, death or killing.

--

Edit:

I think it just has to be the same thing being compared, so i made this up

"Stealing from one is burglary, stealing from millions is tax."

Taxes aren't stealing, because the money are helping you and your fellow humans <.<

And burgling a house helps you and your fellow friends (humans) :p. Just to put it in perspective.
Btw, I do agree with you. Taxes isn't the same as stealing, mainly because if you don't like the taxes or don't like what the government is doing with the taxes you can help remove them. You can't help remove a burgler :p.

I personally think that stealing is stealing, from one or from many. I don't really see the difference here. Can someone explain to me how research = stealing from many?

Maybe its just me, but the way you worded that makes it appear that taxes are always ethical, which is not the case at all.

AS LONG AS YOU CITE PROPERLY, IT IS NOT PLAGIARISM!
So if you steal some someone in real life, just make sure to cite who you stole it from, the time and place, and you can just tell the court it's research.

it's not plagiarism, but it's still theft, which would still be frowned upon in court

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
