Ok, here I am, with a lot of questions about website designing and making a good one.

Well, first, I joined a competition about our website.

So I need some help and of course some ideas of what you like.

Oh, and better recommend some programs, thanks.

I heard that the Microsoft Frontpage was exchanged to Express something something. Whatever....

For the love of .... don't use Frontpage.

All you need is notepad (or any word processor) and how to code in html(xhtml)/css and possibly js for a basic site.

use notepad++ and then if you need an ftp program (command prompt works just fine, but some people dont like it), then id recommend filezilla, but other then that stay away from programs like dream weaver and expression blend, especially for a competition, that's really all you need, because if anyone actually looks at the code for your site and your site was made with one of those, the code will have way too much extra crap thrown in it (and it's not even fully cross-browser compatible)

the one exception is you might want to use something to help you embed flash, since that's pretty messy anyways, but that's still very different from all the code being messy

and for images/content then any program would be fine, i was referring to actually creating the web site, so go ahead and use photoshop or w/e to make your images

Not sure why you'd stay away from dreamweaver, it's a great program and makes the typing process much easier with auto completion and such, it also has an HTML reference, checks for browser compatibility errors, and checks for valid code.

My only complaint with Dreamweaver is you can't set it up to parse PHP in the display mode.

I think the general gist of this thread is: "Use whatever you want. Just DON'T use Frontpage". Frontpage gives the ugliest code.

ANY editor like that gives you ugly code.

Dream weaver isn't to terrible if you don't mind doing a little "house keeping".

In my opinion, it's easier to make the code yourself, rather than clean it up.

x2

and not only that, if you make it yourself, then you actually know what the code does and can answer questions about it / do more stuff then what dreamweaver can do, not to mention you wont have to worry about buying anything

Exactly!
The only time you should use someone else's code is something like forums, or complex JavaScript functions.
Of course, that's only in my opinion.

I use dreamweaver for the highlighting, I still code everything myself.
WYSIWYG editors for websites are lame, nothing good really comes out of them...

I use Notepad++. I'll have the HTML document, and the CSS document up at the same time.
Tabs FTW. <3
