9600GT or Monitor?

Ok well I have about $185 dollars. And I want to use it to upgrade my new pc build. My question is, Should I spend it on a 9600GT or a new monitor?

I have a 8600GT right now.
I have a 3 1/2 year old 17" monitor right now.

Are you not pleased with your previous card? You should save your money for the 8800GT or better card. The 9600 is the low end card for the 9 series. Just like how the 7900GS > 9600GS.

I'd suggest to hold on to your money until you find a good deal. I was able to snatch a 20.1" Westinghouse LCD for only $149.99 open box. It has one small scratch on the top of the screen that you can't see when its on, and its retail price was $260.00 so I can't complain!

If you're using a CRT right now, I highly suggest buying an LCD. It is much easier on the eyes in the fact it gives off less light and does not flicker. This is very good when you sit at your computer for over 5 hours a day :)

You might also consider other components, what about a surround sound headset with 4 speakers in each ear? How about a wireless laser mouse and keyboard combo?

Definitely the monitor - go for a widescreen if you enjoy playing the latest games too.

I'd suggest not getting widescreen. I'm using 1400x1050 which is kind of widescreen, and its really annoying because all the websites stretch the page really far so I use a sidebar to keep it normal.

Although most movies now come at a widescreen ratio, I still suggest getting a standard resolution monitor if you think this might annoy you. A 20" 4:3 monitor looks bigger than a 20" widescreen IMO :)

> A 20" 4:3 monitor looks bigger than a 20" widescreen IMO

There's a couple of problems that people fall victim to when getting widescreen monitors:

1) The size given for widescreens is measured the same as for 4:3, that is, from the bottom of one corner to the top of the other corner. But those who know a little maths can tell you that the diagonal on widescreens is much longer than on a 4:3. The result is that a 20" widescreen is actually smaller than a 20" 4:3 because it's vertical height is smaller.

2) following on from 1), when people think about getting widescreens, they seem to forget that the vertical height still matters a lot. If you have, for example, a 17" 4:3 and want to upgrade to a widescreen, you may find you need at least a 20" widescreen in order to beat the vertical height of the 17" one.

I'm not sure I would use that as a reason to not get a widescreen, unless all you do is surf the web and you never play games or watch TV and Movies. I recommended widescreen because I assume that most people here are at least gamers, if not TV/movie watchers.

Personally, I own a 21" Samsung widescreen with native resolution 1680 x 1050. Nothing but brilliant in my mind, great for TV, great for movies, great for games. I have no problems with websites either - some sites have issues, but that's not the fault of my monitor, that's the fault of the dodgy website design. This site, for example, is variable-width, and it stretches beautifully for widescreen.

@ MeRcChRiS : I can't offer buying advice because I don't think we live in the same country (you live in the USA?)

I'm sure Rad can throw up some nice websites or even retail stores as suggestions.

I guess that makes sense Darg. Although just out of personal preferences I would rather take a taller monitor. I guess each has its pro's and con's.

And Merc, if you're up for it theres a 19" LCD with 5ms response time for just 139.99 here!

Open box, which means theres a risk of getting a scratched or cracked display, but if its serious you can send it back for refund within 15 days.

Thats a good deal, but if you're not interested theres also a 20" for 159.99.

Theres quite alot more here. I'd suggest getting a well known brand, which if the power search options stayed with that link it should be all the "acceptable brands". Not the best, but well known.

Newegg is the only site I can fully suggest. They have absolutely unbeatable prices and have not let me down yet :)

You must be a born programmer : - ) People who live to program like taller monitors so they can see more code on the screen at any one time : - )

> Hey, If I get a new monitor, wont I loose fps?

That doesn't quite make sense, given that LCD monitors these days are so good in terms of response times. Your 8600GT will provide you with an excellent framerate, and a 5ms monitor (what Rad suggested) will give you a maximum refresh rate of (1 / 5ms) = 200 fps . I don't see you having any problems there.

Not really. I never really compared it, but even if you get lower framerates LCD monitors do a great job at emulating other resolutions too.

Except for when you're reading... In an unsupported resolution the text can get really blurry.

Don't be so concerned about FPS though. As long as you have decent FPS, above 30, consistency is all that matters.

Its when you're playing a game at 120fps and suddenly it drops to 40, 1/3 of what its been running at. It gets choppy and unresponsive. VSync will solve this so long as you can keep up around 60FPS.

Most games will run at that on your card.

@Darg - Yeah, compared to using my widescreen laptop at school and this one at home for C++ assignments, its much better being able to see the top of the script without having to put your hands on your mouse and scroll up

Or even worse, using that stupid touch pad!

Yeah I agree, don't worry too much.

Rad have you ever considered buying one of those widescreen LCDs which support 90 degree rotation ? Might be handy, you can rotate it when you want to program, and then put it back the normal way when doing gaming/TV/movies.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
