But is it possible for me to make A.I units only attack units in front of them.

You know give them a limited field of view so they can only attack a unit only if it walks in front of their eyes, not target a unit that's far behind them.

As I remember it was impossible to do.

It ought to be possible by using a custom vision system for all units' vision. The concept would be to only give units a very small sight range (or no sight at all), and use visibility modifiers or dummy units with vision to only reveal the map in front of each unit. In this way, the AI should only be able to see what is in front of each unit, although other units could spot for each other.
