FRANKFORT, Ky. (FOX 56) — A bill that seeks to strip Kentucky workers of their right to meal and rest breaks is moving forward in Frankfort.
House Bill 500, sponsored by Georgetown Republican Rep. Phillip Pratt, would eliminate the requirement that employers provide lunch breaks and rest breaks.
Currently, employers in Kentucky must provide at least a 10-minute rest break for every four hours of work, in addition to a scheduled lunch break every three to five hours.
The bill sets out new guidance: a worker not “completely relieved from any duties for the purposes of eating a meal” can’t be denied pay for time spent eating during a work shift. But if the employer provides a lunch break, no payment is owed for time spent eating outside of a scheduled lunch break.
