Permanently Adding/Removing Hero Abilitys?

Title says it all How can I permanently add/remove hero abilitys? With that I mean removing those you can learn and adding new ones you can learn.

If adding and removing abilities doesn't work for you, you can either replace the hero unit and re-spend skill points or create some custom spell learning system with the spell book ability.

Doesn't feel like you got me right here, I can remove spells a hero learn so he can learn it again and again. The problem is that I cannot modify the abilitys that the hero itself can learn. I wonder how to do that.

You could try giving him a modified "engineering upgrade" ability. This ability completely exchanges abilities of your hero with different ones.
